Hey guys (and girls) I am trying to get off of the percocet that my family doctor has had me one since a car accident as I am have started to notice a dependency.

I haven't taken any percocet in over 24 hours. While that may not seem like much, we must consider that my prescription was 4-8 per day and I was almost always taking the 8 that I was allowed.

What I want to know is if there is anything I can take to try and reduce the withdrawls that will allow me to come off of the oxycodeone.

There are tons of walk-in clinics I can go to in order to get a prescription for meds if needed...

I slept for the past 14 hours. I woke up occassionally but that's about it... I also haven't eaten anything since yesterday morning at breakfast time.

I am in Canada so I'm not sure if there are OTC meds that I can take to try and get off of it.

I mean this in the most helpful way possible: Use the search engine. You will find your answer.

(Hint: It starts with "L" and ends in "operamide." Okay, not everyone likes that advice, but you will find something helpful.)

EDIT: \/ Oh, good point... Canada has codeine! I hate you Canadians!!! ;)
Technically I guess some American states do too, but never been able to get it myself

sense you are in canada go get some otc products that contain the largest amount of codeine per pill u can find, it will help way way more than the above posters idea, but hey mite as well pick some of that up too

take a few of the codeine pills and see how u feel dont go overboard with them u are trying to wd here just more comfortably so just use these to ease yourself threw it trust me they will be like a fucking godsend in a time like this good luck

Codeine is OTC, so you have that going for you. Loperamide is also OTC, which is nice. There are many threads in Other Drugs about coming off opiates, if you have the ability, pick up some benzos or other sedatives to help you sleep and take the edge off when it comes to anxiety.

Thanks for the advice guys... I actually have a bottle of 60 Tylenol 3 in the cupboard and I can get my hands on sublingual 1/2 mg lorazipam...

That should do it I'm guessing?

Like I said, it's only been about 36 hours since I took my last percocet and I'm feeling a little rough but nothing too serious... lots of hot baths/hot tubs in the past 36 hours or so.

When you guys say to use codeine to get me through... how much do you suggest?

I apologize for the constant questions but my family doctor won't do anything to help me aside from prescribe me more percocet and I don't want that as I have acknowledged the start of a problem and want to get off of them.

If you have tylenol 3s, you might just take two or three of those to ease the withdrawals. iirc, tylenol 4 is the highest amount of codeine per pill, so 3s will still help dramatically. Since codeine is an opiate, it will react on the same receptors and ease the dependence withdrawals. I'd say start with 2 tylenol 4s and wait an hour and a half to two hours to see how you feel, then take 1 or 2 more if you're still in pain. Repeat this process every 12 hours or so (once in the morning, once in the evening), and then start taking one pill less each time thereafter so you don't just keep feeding the habit.

You know, if you were only doing 8 or fewer percs a day (5mg/325mg I assume?), then I do think that codeine will be able to more or less "handle" your withdrawal symptoms. 60 ought to get you pretty far through the woods, if not all the way to grandma's house.

I find the only way to make this tapering-with-another-drug work for me is to do two things: write a tentative dosing/tapering schedule (flexible enough to modify if you need something different) and recruit a helper and pill keeper -- personal pharmacist and rehab counselor -- who won't jack yer tictacs.

You won't get high, but it will certainly keep it from getting too horrendous. If you wanna get off, you might consider something like what I've done in the past, fit to your own habits and predilections:

  1. have a friend hold those T3s for you and dole 'em out according to a plan (a plan that includes loopholes for reassessing if it isn't working to sufficiently ease withdrawal);
  2. try to go off your percs for 24 hours or more, until you're pretty sick, then take just enough to feel okay -- NOT HIGH, just barely uncomfortable/sick -- probably just a couple T3s will do it;
  3. repeat, waiting until you recognize you're already sick, but start taking a smaller dose this time (by the second day try like 60-80% of the first dose);
  4. try to skip a day if you can; in any case, don't just reduce your dose -- extend the interval between dosing. I find this a relatively simple way to taper down, since one can usually stand another hour of misery if there's certain relief on the horizon... maybe even another hour;
  5. keep reducing dose and increasing interval.
Like I said, I think 60 is actually more than sufficient. I'd wanna keep it kinda short.

Keeping that regimen up for a week or 10 days, I would think you'd have sailed through 80% of the shitness. Especially if you can dose once on alternate days -- even third days -- then you'll be in good shape.

What's anyone think? Did I just tell my brother junky to do something ridiculously dangerous and miserable?

If you're already 36 hours through, I'd say just tough it out and don't even bother with the codeine.

This is very good advice^^

I did similar for dependence of buprenorphine.

However, OP, you're 36 hours in or more and you say it's not too bad, so I say forgo the codeine and just tough it out for another 2 days! 40mg/day of oxy isn't that huge a habit is it? About equivalent to 60mg morphine?

You'll feel shitty but if you have nothing to do it's very bearable. Just exercise if you can or go for a long walk in the country or something.
Video games, movies, good food, good books: these are all good distractions -- especially if combined with generous doses of Lorazepam! Don't get hooked on that though, only take it for 5-7 days maximum.

If you can't face it or you need to work then do as Socio suggests.

Thanks guys... I've been doing well. I took 2 T3s yesterday simply because of the neck pain I was experiencing after physiotherapy (which is why I was on the oxycodone).

I am feeling pretty well... I slept like a log lastnight with the help of 1 mg of Ativan.

Update - it is now 4 pm in Winnipeg and I am happy to say that I have yet to break down and take anything... I know it's still the early stages but I'm feeling good today.

My wife and son will be home soon which will be nice.

The hardest part to deal with for me is the emotions... I am upset that the medications that were supposed to make me feel better got me to this point. I have never had an addictive personality in the past which is why I guess I don't have the anxiety as a result of the withdrawls.

Yet at the same time I am emotional because I am proud of myself for having the will power to catch the problem before it spiraled out of control..
