Hello all.

It's a common symptom to get constipated when taking any opiate for long period of time. When I get badly constipated I take a Laxative, but I get extremely bad abdominal cramps and diarrhea to a point where I need to curl up cos the pain is that bad! I've been taking a stimulant type of laxative from my local supermarket which is obviously not agreeing with me. Can any of you guys recommend me a different type of laxative that is somewhat mild in side effects? I've heard of bulk-forming laxatives...

Miralax, aka PEG-3350, aka Polyethylene glycol 3350 combined with prune juice and loads of water throughout the day. I know it's gross, but it doesn't cause the cramping, and if taken regularly it works, though it may take a few days to get things moving when you first begin taking it. See, miralax works as an osmotic and gradually draws water into the intestine over time greatly reducing cramps. It's actually the main laxative used (in extremely high doses) as the bowel prep for colonoscopies, because it helps clear things out without the nasty side effects. In the everyday case, it's dosed in a fraction of what it would be for a colonoscopy. As far as the prune juice, it somehow helps to get things churning, but it tastes excessively sweet and is slightly thicker than other fruit juices. It's important to drink lots of water to help everything do it's job efficiently. Milk of magnesia might be another option.

If you are a long term user of opiates I highly recommend the ol enema. Once you learn how it's quick, easy, painless, and very healthy. I've been doing it daily for many years. Get over the stoopid stigma/irrational fear attached to it and man up. You won't be sorry.

There's a new medication out there called Movantik which is specifically for opioid-induced constipation. It's basically like the naloxone (but the molecule is changed a little bit) injection they give to someone who is OD'ing on heroin except this is a pill and it will only stay in your intestines, so it won't decrease the effectiveness of the painkiller you're taking.

I had to go on prescription pills...amitiza works well, but my insurance wouldn't cover it because it is very expensive...so they allowed Linzess, and that has been working

I never wanted to use laxatives myself, I've looked around for more organic answers and I ended up finding that coconut oil is the best answer.

My normal combo of remedies is water, coconut oil, and some powerful food with fiber.

Wake up

Drink 2 bottles of water.

Take the coconut oil in the am before you use. I do about 2 spoon fulls. It will make your stomach a Lil bloated but it will work as a POWERFUL organic laxative. It's stimulates the cells in your intestines to increase their metabolism. it's the most powerful organic thing out there, and it sure feels like it. Plus it will also coat the inside of your intestines and make it easier and smoother to go.

Drink another bottle of water.

Next I go for fiber one bars. I eat say 2 or 3 for my first meal. Don't eat the fiber ones while you use. Do it 2 hours before

And some celery or some lettuce, not ice burg tho. The real crisp dark green lettuce works better, natures broom.

Then more water.

All of this will help you get good nutrition plus it will work to help you go.

The hardest part and most important would be to let the withdrawal kick In a Lil and you will go like you can't imagine hah. But follow this and it will help.

Wish you luck my man. A small break works the best to shit.

Obviously enamas work the best, but try to let the loose bowels of withdrawal do its thing. Again be sure to drink water

Has anyone taken Linzess or know anything about it if it helps with opiate constipation? My GI specialist prescribed it to me but curious if anyone has a positive testimonial. What about Senna-S (over the counter)?
I've used Milk of mag. but that sometimes causes me to have terrible cramps.

Hi thanks for the replies, and sorry for the late response. I bought an OTC organic bulk forming laxative and it works a treat! A little expensive but it works and zero side effects. It takes a few days to get things moving but well worth the wait lol.

I?m going to try senecot because despite having tried a good number of opiates for extended periods at a time (heroin, codeine, dihydrocodeine, buprenorphine, oxycodone) oxycodone has left me far more constipated than any of the others. Heroin I found didn?t constipate me that much at all; codeine much more so but still able to produce rabbit-pellets most days. Since hitting the oxycodone however I actually can?t remember the last time I took a shit. Must be a good few days now. It?s really much worse than the other opiates.

Coffee always usually gets things moving, but I definitely need something more pharmaceutical this time. (My answer to everything). Anyone else found this with oxycodone in particular?

laxatives made with senna always worked best for me. highly recommended. so long as I didn't go bonkers with the dose, senna never gave me any cramping or similar trouble.

I have to agree with the Miralax suggestion. I take oxy and methadone everyday and Miralax is a wonder drug to me. It has no taste so I put a bunch in my bottle of water, shake well (it dissolves immediately) and drink it normally. The next day it'll clean out my system without cramps or diaherra.

I use it a couple of times a week. You can put enough in your drink to make you go the next day or use less and it'll work in a day or two.

I've been on large doses of opiates for many years and this stuff works perfectly, works naturally and has truly made a difference in my life.

I just use whatever my wife buys, so I can't say exactly what they are. Getting cramps and such is fairly common. It's basically diarrhea, except you're still constipated lol - it's not pleasant. Obviously try different things until you get something that works better than the rest.

Now - the only reason I'm commenting is because I wanted too add a very important detail to this discussion: ALWAYS make sure you also take a stool-softener, either a combined pill, or taken separately. Sorry if this is already mentioned, I forgot to search the words before i started typing. But regardless if it's been mentioned already - it is really freaking important!

If the OP takes Miralax then they won't need a stool softener...trust me. Miralax handles all that and doesn't cause stomach cramps. My doctor offered me prescription laxatives but after using Miralax I didn't need it.

Just give it a try. It's a miracle for me after I had years of struggles, stomach cramps and all around feeling bad.
