Oxy contin....is it needed to be given to so many patients in US?

In Ireland I've just been prescribed Oxycontin 20mg. Used to be prescribed Distalgesic (Darvon/Darvocet), till that was taken off market, then had 3 years of Zydol (Ultram/Tramadol I think) and Ibuprofen & Valium 15mg a day, ffs! It's taken 6 years and 15 operations to get proper pain relief, and that's as a private patient with health insurance.

Ironically, took 6 weeks to be diagnosed with ADD and be prescribed 72mg Concerta a day. Fucked up health system here too.

most of the "hillybilly heroin - oxycontin is the new crack" is media created. diversion of Rx drugs for recreational use isn't anything new. OC was a new drug that had a lot of big pharma money behind it but it was prime for abuse cuz the extended release was easily defeated. doctors who sell prescriptions aren't new either. because the world is all plugged into each other now, the media had a good story for a slow night and round and round it goes. the names are changed that's all.

there are many totally legit pain patients who do not divert or abuse their meds and have gotten their lives back and become productive/functional again. everyone is going to respond to meds differently and some people do better on oxycontin. i'm not a doctor; it's not my place to make that judgment.
but i am a nurse usually in er or icu and i see the good and the very bad these drugs can do. i've seen people die from it and i've seen people get better from, for one example, injuries sustained in a bad car wreck and be back to work because their pain is under control.

imho opinion one of the worst things legit pain patients have to face and overcome is that some people think you're an addict getting fk'd up and drooling in your sippy cup every night. they do not get that pain management is not about getting high.

Try coming to South East Florida. I moved here not too long ago and doctors seem to hand out 30mg roxicodone like candy around here.
