UK baby!
I just saw that thread about opiates causing blurry vision and it reminded me of a question I was gonna ask ages ago...

When I take oxy (even like 5-10mg) I get a croaky voice as soon as I come up, sometimes I lose my voice altogether lol. No other opies do this to me it's strictly an oxy thing which kinda sucks seeing as oxy is my fave. I've done oxy loads and it happens pretty much 99% of the time. As soon as I come down my voice instantly goes back to normal. It doesn't hurt or anything it's just really annoying (especially the next day if I did it the night before as people always ask if I'm high lol.)

Does this happen to anyone else, is there something I can do about it and is it dangerous in anyway?

Thanks :)

This happened to me often and in my case it was caused by acid reflux. The opioids would relax the lower esophageal sphincter allowing more acid to reflux up and when it goes high enough, it causes laryngitis (inflammation of the voice box) which produces a characteristic hoarseness, raspy voice, etc.

Whenever I smoked a lot, took benzos, drank lots of caffeine or took amphetamines with the opioids it made it worse.

I would get some antacids (preferably omeprazole) and take them a little while prior to dosing the opioids to see if it helps.

I get the graspy voice alot on any opiate. Also, my gf can tell im high when she hears me talk. I can tell the same in others when they are high on oxy or any other opiate with the sound of that graspy voice.

Happens with all opiates - voice deepens, becomes raspy, etc. There was a post on this exact same topic about a month ago...

Its just a guess, but IME, the voice change is due to total body/muscle/mind relaxation. I put less effort into articulating my words, sometimes this causes slurred speech when I'm very high, and at regular doses (for me that is), causes my voice to get deeper, raspy, and my speech becomes slower in general

Hm I never really noticed it but I guess if you think about it yes.

definitely happens, had a friend who I always knew when he could find or at least was holding because his croaky voice. Bugged the shit out of him that I always knew when to ask haha.

Yeah! This used to happen with me all the time! When ever I would shoot heroin or eat pills I would get the "voice" but not with subs for some reason.....

Yeah, I could always tell when my friend was high because her voice gets raspy. I would assume it happens to me, too but I probably don't notice it.

I like this suggestion! :) The fact that an effect of opiates is muscle relaxation, it would fit that voice muscle control would also lax. I had never thought about it before now. :)

I think I have trained my voice to stop acting like that on opies. It makes it so obvious that you are rox'd out of your mind or w/e. Also, can't have a croaky voice when going to NA/AA/Counseling/Probation lol. 1love.

Mind telling me how you trained your voice to stop acting like this? Cuz my gf can tell when im high and she sorta gets annoyed. Id like it if I could hide it better.

Yea, i get it with all opiates.. and being a singer that means can't do it before gigs... but Jerry did it man!

Yes, I get this too.

Before I got rid of the Bitch Queen From Hell former housemate, there were times now and then that after her manipulative borderline personality disorder bitch self hid my rx pain meds to gain attention, and it didn't work, my having gone out and grabbed a whole bunch of poppy pods, and made a bloody strong liter or three of disgusting tasting pod tea, that I've had to communicate by signing, rather than speaking.

I almost NEVER am nonverbal normally, but those times, I might as well have been, because I couldn't speak an intelligible word. Now if that happens, mind you, I'm stuffed, as there is nobody here who can speak ASL:P

i havent ever noticed the voice thing but i have noticed when i first started taking my subs that it would blur my vision pretty bad sometimes
