So last year I did a pretty decent amount of hiking from spring/summer onwards, then towards the last few months of the year was using a rowing machine pretty regularly.

This year I decided I would like to take up running and my fucking feet are killing me. Admittedly I was using less than adequate shoes for running and I even got laughed at by the shop assitant for using the shoes that I did! But I have bought some proper ones now but my feet have been killing non stop for about 10 days whenever I try and run even 10 meters.

Whats wrong with my feet? Have I fucked them?

Also I was thinking of using an excerise bike til I sort my feet out! Would this effect the recovery time for my feet? I figure it cant hurt them, as they arent constantly pounding concrete like they are with running but I would like to be able to run 5k or so!

Thanks

Hi Crampz, my question to you is, how often do you run? Do you run almost everyday? I noticed for myself, my legs get sore if I do it straight days in a row so maybe what you need to do is to do i every other day so you give yourself time to recuperate and then you can run again the following day.

You can try a stationary bike or maybe eliptical as well and see if it will help you. I am not quite sure how much your feet hurts but you may have developed some type of injury and if you still run constantly it will just strain it more. See if the every other day routine works and see how you feel.

well I only did it 4 times LOL. The last time my feet hurt so much with every step I had to stop. It is a weird feeling, almost like twisted ankles but not as intense as a full on twisted ankle but I can feel it when I walk!

I did 40 minutes on the exercise bike today though and no feet issues. I wonder when they will get better, maybe running just isnt for me :(

Sore feet on new runners is not uncommon, but it sounds like you can barely go any distance at all before feeling pain, which is not normal.

Let your feet recover and then try again. If the problem improves with the new shoes, then you know it was the shoes.

If you have any misalignment in your body, especially if your lower back is tilted to one side at all, then running can hurt your feet. Is the pain referring to anywhere else, or is it *just* in the feet? If it refers, then there is a greater alignment problem. If not, then chances are the problem is just foot related.

If your feet were injured at all in the past 5 years, then you might have a bone misalignment in the foot itself. There are so many tiny bones in the foot and if they are off at all it can cause foot pain.

The arch in some people's feet is not conducive to a runner's lifestyle. People with flat feet will get a lot of foot pain if they try it. If you have coverage it might be worthwhile to visit a podiatrist to explain the problem to them. They can examine your foot to determine the effectiveness of your foot arch. If it's not that great then they might want to make you custom orthotics which would correct the problem.

Doing an exercise bike at the gym would be a good way to get your cardio without impacting you injured feet. I know it's more boring but it's a cardio solution at least.

I had a similar issue of ankle stiffness (including pain and weakness) at the beginning of outdoor runs one spring after a winter off. I believe it was either lack of flexibility in the ankles themselves or tightness in the lower leg muscles pulling on the tendons as the feeling would dissipate after a kilometer or two. What worked for me was an in-place gradual warm-up to start (until the pain disappeared), for as you said even a walk/run was uncomfortable.

The problem eventually resolved with nothing more than continued training (perhaps I put a bit more emphasis on stretching after workouts as well).
