CAPE GIRARDEAU • James Tebeau, the owner of a southern Missouri campground that hosted music festivals that featured open-air drug sales, pleaded guilty Tuesday morning to a federal drug charge.
Prosecutors say Tebeau, a member of a Grateful Dead tribute band called the Schwag, hosted the weekend-long music festivals known as “Schwagstock” or “Spookstock” at Camp Zoe, his 350-acre property in Shannon County.
The events attracted an average of 5,000 fans. In addition to live bands, the festivals featured 100 to 200 dealers selling roughly $500,000 worth of marijuana, psychedelic mushrooms, ecstasy, cocaine, LSD, opium, moonshine, and hash brownies and cookies, prosecutors said.
Tebeau, 44, was not involved in the drug sales and did not profit from them but was aware of them, prosecutors said. He told staffers that marijuana, LSD and hallucinogenic mushrooms were permissible, but crack cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin or nitrous oxide gas dealers should be kicked out.
He admitted as part of his plea that “he intended that Camp Zoe be made available for sellers and users of controlled substances,” prosecutors said.
The festival's downfall began in August of 2006, when the Missouri Highway Patrol arrested two people for the sale of illegal mushrooms. Investigators would go on to make more than 150 undercover purchases of various drugs at the festivals.
Tebeau, who managed Camp Zoe from 2004 until October 2010, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one felony count of maintaining a drug-involved premises in exchange for an agreed-upon prison sentence of 30 months.
