This year's DEMF lineup had me thinking "Who do you think is overrated and why?"

We can skip obvious choices like Deadmau5 since she already has her own respect/disprespect thread but for example..

I think Skrillex is overrated because his sound design is lackluster, tracks are noisy, abrasive, and often undanceable, and he suffers from Steve Aoki syndrome which presents as an inverse relationship between his energy level and the quality of what he plays. As the track sucks more and more, he jumps around, smokes, and headbangs harder to make up for sucking. Reports have also said he's actually gotten worse at performing the more often he plays out. Yet he may be invited to DEMF.
...and, he's on Mau5trap.

skrillex, datsik, excision

ive seen them all 3 times, each time the local openers were way better.

but it's worth it if you just want to get fucked up in front of a wall of BASS and touch sweaty women

deadmau5 will get mentioned lots.. he's worth seeing for the cool lights and shit.. but not worth the $130 I paid.

You paid $130??? I definitely hope it was for more than JUST Deadmau5.

Also... speaking of Datsik. Speaking solely on his production, his solo stuff is pretty uncreative for the most part. It's only the collabs he does with Excision that really pop off for me. Datsik can't produce a hot beat.

haha nope.. this is Vancouver.. EVERYTHING is ridiculously expensive. opener was Kim Fai and a local DJ who i forget.

Damn! I'm not gonna fake like I know the conversion rate worth a damn, cause I don't, but $130 is expensive in EITHER country! I hope it was at least a good show. I can't say I've kept up much with Deadmau5 so I'm not one to speak on overratedness in his regard, but I can't believe he would bring in THAT kind of money.

Steve Aoki, Pretty Lights, Rusko, modern pendulum, modern Infected Mushroom, modern DJ Shadow, Armin Van Buuren.

A lot of other currently "hip" acts...

Absolum - he's quite big in the psytrance scene but I find his live full on act to be a little bit boring.

Andy C - I know he's somewhat of a legend in drum and bass but he's just not that great of a dj. He's been hit and miss most of the time.

the mau5 is a guy named joel zimmerman... not a female...
Yes, thank you for the hot tip. I'm sorry you missed my sexist joke insinuating that Joel Zimmerman is a whiny bitch.

Nit Grit was recently booked here and I heard a big buzz about people wanting to see him but when I heard his tracks thought to myself that they sound like amateur fruity loops dubstep.

I absolutely agree with Levictus about Rusko. He's sounded one-dimensional and generic since the beginning and his new material makes it apparent that he's a flavor of the week trying to outlast his 15 minutes of fame.

To some extent, I think Caspa falls into that territory also.

Sorry, I can't edit posts from this machine. Mods, feel free to merge with the above post.

I think Flying Lotus also lands at the top of my overrated list. I've heard a lot of people talk about how influential and original he is but I've tried listening to many tracks and could only make it about halfway through each before I started thinking "I just don't get it. This is loping, noisy, unquantized garbage."

I got Cosmagramma from my local library the other day so I could give him one more chance and it was even worse than I expected. What's so great about layers of rhythmless, processed noise over off-kilter beats?

Gaslamp Killer is another one I feel the same way about. I feel like if he wasn't associated with Brainfeeder, nobody would notice him at all. Plus, his production sounds like lo-fi, bootleg remixes of songs that were great originals and he can't DJ worth a damn.

It sounds like a majority of the stuff you're listing (the OP) is stuff that has become somewhat popular; perhaps you're simply trying to come off as more of an aficionado of the genre in response to the popularization of the music?

Come to think of it, why are most electronic shows so fucking expensive here? The last MSTRKRFT show at the Commodore was like $75 and $55 the time before that. $130 for Deadmau5 took it to a whole new level of ridiculous though. Pretty sure his show in Kelowna was a similar price as well.

meh those are mainstream shows.. $6 for a SHAHdj's backstage lounge show, and more fun!

Mayb the thread opener was being hater and just likes hating on an electro DJ (DEADMAu5) but i didnt see him on the line up @ DEMF.....I dont see a whole bunch of solid DJs/artists in this DEMF line up...Dam Funk and Felix da housecat are the only 2 i'd pay to see.

but i didnt see him on the line up @ DEMF
Earlier, when DEMF 2011 was in the planning stages, Paxahau was conducting a survey asking who people wanted to see as headliners. Some of the choices were Benny Bennassi, Deadmau5, David Guetta, Cookie Monsta, Carl Craig, and a few others but you are correct that Deadmau5 didn't make the cut.

In reality, the DEMF lineup ended up better than I would've expected. Carl Craig, Beardyman, Ben Klock, Elliott Lipp, James Zabiela, Fatboy Slim, and Ramadanman are all acts worth seeing.

On the other hand, have you heard Felix Da Housecat's recent work with Puff Daddy?

I'm not so much a hater, just L337R()N!(.

Yeah...and that staff with the eyeball on top of it.

"Look into the eyyyye. THE EYYYE"

ick

Yea I've heard Felix's new mix with Puff. I cant say that i really like it, tho. Felix is trying his best to go mainstream but I think he's better off making his own brand of music & staying away from radio friendly music.
