I wrote this in sometime in 1997, and it's still the first poem in the manuscript that I prepared for grad school. No matter how much my style and voice change, I don't know that I'll ever be able to let this one go :)
Thanks for reading :)
Outsider at the In-Crowd Party
Let them speak in stutters and in stares,
last words left hanging in wait for an answer
which will never be correct: they
breathe and breath creates sound out of air,
but do not think; see without seeing
since two sets of eyes are not the same;
live without living, without life.
Learn their tongues, but whisper in another language.
Keep laughter quiet in their crowded rooms.
Conspire and slip through nights unnoticed,
a patient, precious wraith with intimations
of fascinating lies and nonexistent faces.
They will push, and you will spin
instead of falling down - dancing:
let them lead you where they like
then leave them exhausted; be casually amused,
cast glances over all cold shoulders present,
lay down lightly, sleep above the sheets
deep in dreams of weightless days
lacking gravity.
