Outrageous HSBC Settlement Proves the Drug War is a Joke!

If you've ever been arrested on a drug charge, if you've ever spent even a day in jail for having a stem of marijuana in your pocket or "drug paraphernalia" in your gym bag, Assistant Attorney General and longtime Bill Clinton pal Lanny Breuer has a message for you: Bite me.

Breuer this week signed off on a settlement deal with the British banking giant HSBC that is the ultimate insult to every ordinary person who's ever had his life altered by a narcotics charge. Despite the fact that HSBC admitted to laundering billions of dollars for Colombian and Mexican drug cartels (among others) and violating a host of important banking laws (from the Bank Secrecy Act to the Trading With the Enemy Act), Breuer and his Justice Department elected not to pursue criminal prosecutions of the bank, opting instead for a "record" financial settlement of $1.9 billion, which as one analyst noted is about five weeks of income for the bank.

yeah sorry peeps but Karma isnt going to make these guys all drop dead or go broke tomorrow. Theyre probably going to continue to live fabulously wealthy lifestyles.

Angry? you people voted these politicians into office

Dont Vote 2016

America is on the decline.
The hypocrisy of the drug war - and all the other wars - will come back to bite the western, English speaking world soon enough. Global dominance doesn't last forever, especially when crooks like this are running the show.
I wouldn't blame these people alone; start with Anslinger and everyone complicit with his grubby campaigning and move forward from there.

How is not voting going to solve anything? Then they just stay in office. Being involved in the system and demanding and instigating reform is much more helpful than the fruitless "I'm such a rebel, I don't vote, I'm too smart for that, I just bitch about everything" attitude. But I understand staying engaged in policy can be run a person ragged. So better yet, run for office yourself and expose the flaws of the system to the masses. I think independent voters appreciate someone with genuine life experience who is real and speaks their mind rather than plastic corporate puppets that we are always used to.

violent revolution anyone? it is the people who have the power, they just need to be organized. If every person in the states came running at the government with AKs and m4a4s or whatever i'm pretty sure a lot of this corruption shit would stop. Then whoever takes over will probably fall into the same corruption but either way, enough of these revolutions and drugs will be legal.

Yeah, people have been proposing that in America since the 1800's if not earlier and it still hasn't happened. Emma Goldman and the anarchists in the 1900's. The Yippies in the 1960's. There have been countless radicals whose ideas of revolution have never come to fruition. The major just don't want it. Violent revolutions just give governments an opportunity to justify more escalation in combatting crime and more civil rights violations.

We need to be the karma. If enough of us drugged out intelligent folk stood up for ourselves and our beliefs, then these kind of bullshit events would be a thing of the past. but instead we get online and complain about it.... karma does exist, we just need to help it out a little.

are we still surprised that banks are above the law? im doing my part by using a credit union and not voting for corporate sponsored politicians(a vote for dem/rep is basically saying youre ok with this shit)

yeah it's hard to organize a bunch of sheep into doing anything and society is organized this way for a reason. I'm not going to to be the first person on the front lines with an AK going for the government/corporate offices when no one else is even going to show up. With the internet and social media though, organizing people may become easier, like those riots in london, the shit that happened in egypt and other instances. The government even with all their power cannot outnumber the people if they had solidarity. It could work in theory, in practice it'll probably never happen but i'll keep dreaming.

^^the problem with any real change is that the media controls perceptions.

OWS and the Tea Party actually had common goals to work for but cue media....and all you see is the most stupid of each group being as stupid as possible in front as many people as possible.

Boom, real meaningful change is reduced to partisan lines and everything remains the same with some new labels.

As for the article, didn't Wachovia pay like a $40million fine on laundering billions and billions each month for years....like 2-3 years ago? And another odd aspect, I heard this mentioned on NPR and they only mentioned the 'taking money from terrorists' and didnt speak one bit about drug money.

Ugh we're fucked...
