out of date pethidine.... are they safe???

i've found pethidine in a box under my bed, but there seriously out of date like 16 years out of date. but there still in there blister packs and box. could someone tell me if i'm going to kill my self by taking them??? Thanks

We can't possibly promise that I'm afraid! However it is unlikely they will do you any harm. They may have degraded, or you may get lucky. Be careful with pethidine though, it can cause seizures and neurotoxicity at higher doses.

Also do not chronically dose this for more than a couple of days at a time... This will result in much the same fate.

Save pethidine (meperidine in the US) for an every now and again experience. Don't take too much, nor for too long, as you have been warned. It lowers the seizure threshold considerably, and is neurotoxic. Whether or not they are safe to take, I cannot guarantee, but I would if I were you. Try no more than 1 tablet to start with to ensure that they are fairly okay to take.
