Since people use ROAs such as intranasal or intravenous but why dont people use otic ROAs, like recreationally not medicinally like antibiotics for ear infections or would otic like dissolve your ear drums
Not a doctor but I’m pretty sure the main issue is that the outer ear canal is lined with skin and not a mucous membrane like the inside of your nose or the surface of your eye. Intact ear-canal skin is also a pretty poor route for systemic drug absorption.
Most antibiotics that are put in the ear are specifically formulated as topical treatments, they are intended to reach high concentrations in the ear canal and treat a local infection rather than get into the bloodstream.
The middle ear *is* lined with mucosa, but you normally can’t just put something there without getting past the eardrum.
So broadly speaking… putting a drug in your ear is much more likely to result in local exposure than the kind of rapid systemic absorption you get from routes like the nose, lungs, GI tract, or injection.
