OTC treatment for opiate overdose?

Thank you for the milk suggestion asbeen.

So, this thread is almost a year old....

I realize this is a very very touchy subject for people. In a genuine OVERDOSE situation, like a life threatening one, nobody should fuck around ever. When its life or death, nothing else should come first. You go to the hospital and thats that.

I get the feeling that people are offended by the concept of home remedies to help you come down. I can understand the concern, but I dont think this information is always entirely inappropriate.

Havnt you ever been just a little too high and wanted to sober up a bit? Some of you might say, NO! lol. Still, we are talking about a NON-LIFE THREATENING situation where everyone is up walking around and breathing....capable of brewing the coffee themselves, capable of pouring their own class of milk....we are not talking about making somebody drink milk when they are foaming at the mouth, nodding hard, respiratory depression or any of that.

So we are talking about how to come down JUST SLIGHTLY in a NON EMERGENCY setting. This doesnt have much to do with saving peoples lives from true overdose, but still.....some of the remedies that help people in these NON-EMERGENCY situations might be safer than others, so that alone makes it a worthy discussion. 'Just dont do it' is kind of like 'Just say No' as a drug policy....it doesnt work. People ARE going to try various remedies to come down off drugs, and I am not sure that this knowledge is a bad thing.....I dont think many intelligent people will be trying to feed their friends milk or pour coffee in their butts after they are foaming at the mouth and not breathing. I dont think the topic should necessarily offend people, as long as the context is clearly understood.....when we are talking about non-emergency situations where you are going to ultimately be fine weather the remedy works or not, but perhaps being able to play off being sober could prevent social or legal harm, or perhaps if there was some kind of emergency like a natural disaster and you needed your wits about you, and you wanted to come down slightly without making yourself too dope sick to function with Narcan.....like, if you were the one in better shape, no cell phone reception, your other friend IS ODing and might die if you dont get to a hospital, but you dont want to kill anyone on your way from the cabin back into town.....Im sure there are a few things that could be grabbed relatively quickly (ie, not waiting for coffee to brew, but something which might be already on hand) that might help.

So, what might you use to improve your mental function and help you come down slightly when you are NOT overdosing, but a little more high than you feel comfortable with?

I believe this is a worthy question when you are very clear about your intentions.

Are there any RCs that would speed up your heart and breathing effectively while on opiates?

It Just won't absorb and work properly like this if someone is OD'd and passed out this just won't be effective at all & you would be wasting precious time you don't have to waste in an OD situation.

The other thing about this idea that is bad is Naloxone needs to be properly dosed & you just simply couldn't do that with a nasal spray bottle & doing it that way. It's super easy to measure out a quick IM dose in a syringe and give the injection.

I know for most people you would be worried about them giving a proper injection but I'm a RN in a busy ER & have given 1000's of injections and even have experience giving Naloxone injections for OD's. It would be no different then doing it at work except I'd use different syringes. I could even take home some from work legally if I'd like (syringes that is)

Your actually correct, as much as I'd like it to be a nasal spray type of ordeal and not mess with needles it just simply won't work properly that way nor will you get it absorbed up the nose during an OD where I'm 100% passed out or a friend is.

Plus being an RN I'm qualified to give someone an injection, i've dealt with naloxone injections before at work. I wouldn't even be nervous doing a quick IM injection on a fallen freind ya know? No big deal I'd get it handled if it happens.

I wish needle exchanges would give out Naloxone after attending like a quick 1 hour certification class on it's usage. Make people learn about how to properly administer it than give it out to them. It would save a lot of lives as well as save people from these dangerous at home attempts for reversing an OD. It's a win win situation and nobody is using Naloxone for anything besides what it's meant to be used for so there really isn't much risk in giving it out.
I've seen quite a few comments like this one....The exchange I go to in NYC has a "class" every Wednesday for narcan administration. I went to the class and was given 10 vials of Narcan and some IM syringes. I really hope this type of thing starts to spread a little.

Maybe I should start a new thread about how to come down faster, NOT related to overdose. People hear that word and they dont seem to like shifting gears away from calling 9-11, which is of course the best course of action when someones life is actually in danger.

fucking pisses me off that you can't get epi-pens and stuff like a narcan auto-injector OTC. and I even feel like it's bullshit that I can't have a morphine auto-inject in my first-aid kit. Sometimes people go into shock and shit if you get like a compound fracture.
