Ore. bill would make cigarettes prescription drug

SALEM, Ore. -
A Democrat state lawmaker from Portland has introduced legislation that is turning heads -- a proposal to list cigarettes as a drug available only by prescription.

KPTV reports that Rep. Mitch Greenlick, a Democrat from Portland, is sponsoring a bill that makes cigarettes a Schedule III controlled substance,

meaning it would be illegal to possess or distribute cigarettes without a doctor's prescription.

Under the proposal, offenders would face maximum punishments of one year in prison, a $6,250 fine or both.

Other drugs and substances that are considered Schedule III controlled substances include ketamine, lysergic acid and anabolic steroids.

"The State Board of Pharmacy may adopt rules placing requirements and limitations on the sale or transfer of products containing nicotine," the bill's text says.

Salem resident Juan Silva said, "I think it's pretty crazy," and that he doesn't see it passing. Others see the proposal differently.

"I hope it passes and I hope people actually think about it," said Rick Cannon of Salem.

"You know, there's less and less smokers every day, because they know how bad it is for them, so I just hope people wake up and realize how bad it actually is for them."

Nicotine being a Schedule III substance wouldn't be inappropriate considering that many other less addictive substances are in Schedule II !!!

But there should be no such thing as an illegal drug which means NO penalties whatsoever. Drug use in 99% of cases is a private matter.

haha, this will be dismissed immediately in a court of law. there's no way to prohibit the use of tobacco or alcohol as seen through the eras of prohibition and even today when legal highs are being banned, they simply become illegal, and the money is funded to the hands of drug dealers instead of the government which gets its 20% tax cut on (here in the UK anyways).

I wonder if insurance would cover cigs. talk about cheap cigs if I only gotta do copays

Ugh for real. Can people please just stop. Yes I smoke. I no longer drink I live a simplistic lifestyle occasionally dipping into other indulgences but my life is not a fucking shit show train wreck it was for the 8+ years I was drinking. 25 and 2 years sober ! Take away my parliament menthol lights and there will be hell to pay. I smoke in my car I'm conscious of others who don't smoke smoke far away from non smokers and don't litter. Leave us the fuck alone. Make alcohol a fucking Class I. I see no use in pompous assholes getting drunk and degrading women for a couple giggles after some jack n cokes then crashing their car on the way home to date rape someone. (I have no problem with alcohol but really.)

^Maybe, but Big Tobacco isn't nearly so big as it was in 50's (relative to other entities)

Yeah.

I don't see why you would make something with no medical value require a prescription to obtain. Oregon is a pretty "liberal" place, but I don't think that this bill has any momentum. People love their cigarettes everywhere.

This has got to be the stupidest bullshit ever, but it would be funny if this passed AND they legalized weed there.
