The metal pipe is your best bet. No way you're going to not completely waste it, let alone be able to smoke it in papers, blunt or bong. When you apply heat it liquifies.
Your pipe is going to get hot as hell. I would recommend getting a candle, some tape to put around the mouthpiece and a damp wash cloth around. When smoking just keep bowl of the pipe almost sideways so the liquid doesn't pour into the stem and clog it. Just keep heating it from the candle and puff a lot until you get a cloud of smoke going. A lighter is going to get hot as fuck. Once you get it going, you should be alright, but if you get a lot of opium or want to smoke all night be prepared with all that shit, especially if using a metal pipe. Metal pipes hit great with opium, but man they get HOT. The best pipe I used for opium was an old straight pipe made out of camel bone.
And yeah, opium should look something like little chunks of tar from a driveway, rabbit crap or fairly reminscent of hash. It should smell something like flowers. Sometimes it's really sticky, sometimes it's more dry, sometimes it's hard like a little black rock. Either way it'll melt when you apply heat and have a really distinct smell. You'll take a few hits and feel nice and mellow and keep wanting more. It's not really one of those "yeah, let's take 81937408 lung fulls and get fucked up right away" things either.. it's more like you sit with a friend or friends and spend a few hours sitting there smoking slowly and talking and laughing like dumbasses.
