Opinions on Trazodone for insomnia

I took a dose one time of an odd triangular shaped trazodone which could be broken into three parts; not sure of dosage. I was also heavily intoxicated and within 20 or 30 minutes I could not even sit up. I had to pee so badly but my entire body felt as if I were tied to the bed, so I ended up crawling to the bathroom and sitting down to piss just because I knew if I didn't go then, I would wake up in an unfortunate situation lol. I believe it's very effective for occasional insomnia. Friends of mine take it nightly and I've never heard any complaints of tolerance, contrary to the educated posting above. Might be a placebo thing.

Nah, I can get by without my mirtazapine or my olanzapine and still sleep beautifully with just the trazodone. It's what I consider my strongest prescribed sedative.

I've been using 50mg trazodone for years on and off for sleep. It works wonders for me without any morning grogginess. It's touted as being non-habit forming and since I get addicted to almost everything, I can tell you that I don't crave it or seek it or pay out the ass for it. So it's not addicting to me! It knocks me out very quickly, within 20 minutes so I don't know if it would keep you up if you didn't fall asleep right away. I've actually tried staying awake after taking it but no success. My daughter also takes it and she occasionally complains of morning grogginess. As far as ambien, I can stay awake after taking it and the buzz it quite pleasant for me and it can be habit forming. I've purchase ambien on the street but never trazodone. Try the trazodone first. It may work well for you. Although everyone is different, but it's better for you than ambien.

This thread is nearly a year old mate.lol

Ive had a lot of succes with mirtazapine and low dose hydroxyzine taken together.

Old thread but I'll contribute.

It was the first thing I was prescribed for insomnia. It's not effective for me and just leaves me feeling dizzy. Glad to see it's effective for some people. Maybe it's a good first step before trying out benzos.

I've been prescribed Trazodone numerous times because I have trouble sleeping. Most of those times I was given it at a inpatient rehab or mental hospital. To be honest, the drug never really put me to sleep. It seemed to be a hit or miss with me, but mainly no matter how high the dose of Trazodone they put me on, I'm not falling asleep.

Yea I made this thread a while ago...

No longer take Trazodone. While I feel it will work for some people, it just doesn't compare to any hypnotic or benzo. It doesn't always make me feel tired. It doesn't seem to work all that well for comedowns either. I'll get the "heavy" feeling but still be left restless. Plus, it's action makes me cautious to take it on a stimulant comedown.

I've been prescribed a benzo pretty much the entire time soon after I started this thread. Yes, it's can be a terrible addiction for some and the choice to take it daily for anxiety will still result in a physical dependance, but I have accepted that. Diazepam does wonders for me. It helps comedowns tremendously and my day to day anxiety is easily handled with it. I have been questioning lately if I have a bad physical dependance (as I can take up to 40mg for a stimulant comedown and still walk a straight line fine), but I've been without it for a few weeks now and haven't had any noticeable withdrawal symptoms.

Hate to keep adding to an old thread, but the only reason I keep trazodone around is because it gives massive boners at low doses. It's good for occasional insomnia, but tolerance builds quickly for many.

Felt literally nothing the short while I took it in treatment.

My overall opinion, however, is that a tetracyclic antidepressant has no business being prescribed purely as a sleep aid.

Well if I am Not Mistaken which I am Pretty Sure I am Not. It is Technically an Anti-Depressant Chemically-Structure-Wise and I Try to Stay Away from Anti-Depressants more than any other Drug like the Plague Except Anti-Psychotics probably WORSE if NOT EQUALLY as DANGEROUS MIND FUCKERY!!!

But to Answer your Question OP..... For Me I tried 100mg One Night did nothing and Next Consecutive-Night in a Row 200MG still did nothing I got NO SLEEEP-INDUCING EFFECTS from Trazadone but everyone Reacts Differently that was just Me. I use Temazepam for Sleep Addictive but if Treated Like Similar to Alcohol Once a Week in a Certain Limited Dosage to Prevent Physical-Dependance and Tolerance Worse Possible Side-Effect is Rebound-Anxiety And Insomnia but Temazepam does not Effect the R.E.M. and Natural Sleep Cycle nearly as much as Trazadone does or Clonazepam would it still Effects it a Bit but not enough to Notice much of a Difference Short-Term it would take Long-Term High-Dose Temazepam Usage to Seriously fuck your Dreaming Patterns and Sleeep Dreaming Hygiene Cycles Dreams is when you have "Rapid Eye Movement (R.E.M.) Sleeep Studies with Rats have Shown if Woken when ever they Start Dreaming Any Animal but Bodily Wise Rat is Closest to Humans only Difference is our Blood-Brain-Barriers way more Complex Hence there Great for Lab Testing but not Always Perfectly Predictable for Looking for Reactions in Humans to Substances. But you need to Dream or have Nightmares in Order to Survive just Deep Sleep is not enough to Live off of which is for the Physical Bodily Recovery R.E.M. is thought to have more to do with Mental and Emotional Healing, Processing and just Over-All Mental Recovery and Rest.

I tried it with little success. However many do - With medications it seems they work different for everyone.

I now use either Remron or Zyprexa for my sleep.
They seem to be much more powerful, sedating and longer lasting imo - Perfect for ppl with severe insomnia or people who get up multiple times in the night.
Maybe for people with mild and or occasional insomnia Trazadone might be better. This is what i found anyways.

For me Trazadone would have a very short sedation window before i was back to feeling awake and not sedated. So i had to fall asleep in that sedation window.
I found with Remron and Zyprexa i could take it, stay up for 2-3 hours and still be feeling sedated (and able to sleep). This wasn't the case for me with Trazadone though. The sedation effect would be gone in less than an hour for me :/ Probably why Trazadone helped me sleep but didnt stop me from getting up multiple times in the night.

I believe trazadone has a shorter half life . Just double check to confirm. But that could explain why trazadone would only assist me in getting to sleep but not staying asleep like Remron & Zyprexa have done.

Another downside i felt with Trazadone was that i felt it killed my memory. And the next day i wouldn't feel like myself and id feel kinda out of it and socially retarded. Remron and Zyprexa dont do this nearly as much if at all.

Imo best sleep med for me is Remron.
Theres the Z drugs too but i found they also killed my memory (as they work more like benzos than any other sleep med) and tolerance would build to them incredibly fast.

& Benzos - But also kills my memory (benzos are notorious for doing this), they interfere with sleep quality moreso compared to the other meds. Not to mention addiction. You will probably end up taking benzos in the day too lol and before you know it... Im sure you get the story.

Theres also seroquel. Which i found worked great for sleep but that can fuck up your liver and enzymes long term. Its also an antipsychotic moreso than a sleep aid aswell.
Each to their own though with the meds i think. Thats my 2 cence on the sleep meds I've tried incl trazadone though. :)

I personally hated it, but many people do seem to benefit from it. I would recommend a very low dose of seroquel but alas I am not a doctor and you should take my recommendation with a grain of salt

Totally agree. Same goes for seroquel. These drugs have so much potential for nasty side effects.
