Do they make heroin out of the opium that they harvest there? Do they just smuggle it in its original gum form to Israel, Egypt or wherever?
There is that eastern valley called Bekaa (sp?) where the gorgeus Red Lebanom hashish came from; and poppies have allways been cultivated there, but I am not aware of lebanese h being found in the markets, european ones at least

Likely that they at the very least purify the opium into alkaloids. It's not smart to move multiple kilos of something that's only like 14% controlled substance.

I don't think anyone would smuggle unrefined opium latex. Weight-by-weight it's not lucrative. Also it has a very strong distinctive smell.

So, what do they do with it? Do they refne it into h? Do they just use the whole harvest into the country's borders?

About opium , while I sure understand that the $ is into refined products, they actually smuggle latex by the tone (many tones, every year) from Afghanistan into Iran, not to refine into h (not all of it) but to be smoked or eaten.

I keep reading these last years about opi harvest increasing in the country, aswell as in the Sinai. Can't help but wonder about the destination of such productions

I reckon they'd do the first manufacturing step and convert the opium to morphine base. Someone somewhere down the line can then further refine it to produce heroin.
