I take 1 mg twice daily of klonopin and have been for about 3 years now. I am completely dependent on them. I do not raise or lower my dosage. I keep it at a steady 1 mg 8 am in the morning, and 1 mg at 4 pm.

My question is when I use opiates, should I lower the dosage of my klonopin so I don't have acute withdrawal the next day? I usually take my regular dose of klonopin and take a 30 mg roxi on top of it, but then the next day I am very anxious since I am duplicating the power of the benzo by potentiating it with the oxy.

Should I take less? Should I replace my afternoon 1 mg of klonpin with the oxy only when I use oxy as it works for my anxiety at the moment? Should I cut the k pin dosage in half so I dont feel like i need more benzo tomorrow?

Or should I just take my regular dose and then suffer the consequences the next day......?

taking benzos while on opiates wont affect your opiate withdrawals the next day but it can be incredibly dangerous considering both of these types of drugs are CNS depressants and can make you have trouble breathing without even realizing it.

I would halve your benzo dose whenever taking opiates just to be safe, especially since the opiates will do the same thing for anxiety as the Kpins and you can save the Kpins for when you dont have opiates because benzos help with opiate withdrawals IME

It's not opiate withdrawal I am worried about, it is the benzo.

Exactly what I was afraid would happen happened. I woke up about three days after using opiates and the benzo's, even after cutting my afternoons benzo in half. I woke up vomiting and secreting a clear liquid.

I was trembling, anxious, could not get comfortable, could not eat, and was basically afraid of doing anything.

Messing with the opiates while I am dependent on benzo's completely put me into withdrawal when I stopped the opiate use

i'm on the exact klonopin regime as you. be VERY careful. i OD'd by doing heroin not long after dropping a clonnie (and i have tolerance to both heroin and benzos...it's a seriously dangerous mixture).

here's what i do now. if i'm going to do an opiate in the evening, i don't take any benzos that day (day before is as usual). i try to do the opiate as early as i can. then i wait until i feel like i've pretty much come down. once i'm convinced that the my body has metabolized most of the opiates, i'll take 1mg or even 0.5mg of klonopin right a bedtime. if bedtime comes around and i still feel high, i skip the klonopin altogether. then i gobble one first thing in the morning.

this approach has never given me trouble.

As someone else mentioned, mixing benzos/opiates can cause CNS/respiratory depression. Be careful.

I know a lot of people come to the board for advice but truthfully, as good advice as you get here, you should also seek medical advice when it comes to altering your dosages. No poster wants to live with guilt if you do something to harm you and no patient should substitute our advice for medical. Only you know why you need these meds and only you know if your anxiety will increase or decrease by adding other drugs in the mix.
