Opiates and there effects on your personality

Nobody seems to have mentioned the rebound emotional stste during and after WD. From my shortish dalliance with opiates, I found that after the physical symproms had succeeded, it still didn't take much to get a massive emotional response (as I've mentioned before, I once found myself in tears at the end of a Lassie type film!).

I think that aspect is almost a response to being emotionally blunted while under the influence of opiates; although they do produce a contented state, they definitly blunt emotional responses. I think it's also that aspect of opiates that allows people dependant on them to do things that, if you hadn't been using them, would play on your mind afterwards. I'm sure that's why some people can steal from very close friends and family, and then try to justify that behaviour when caught.

A couple of years ago, my wife was on pethedine, then high dose dihydrocodeine for a total of 6 months, due to a bad back injury, and at the highest dosage level, she could be selfish and bad tempered (which is far from her normal self) - basically, it nearly split us up. Now she only takes dihydrocodeine occasionally, but thinks that I've exaggerated how much she changed while on high doses. I know that I didn't.

I agree with what fastandbulbous said. I've experienced a range of emotions on opiates. From being "emotionally blunted" and doing things that I normally would never do, to the "emotional rebound" that occurs after the kick.

when i was strung out on heroin i would either be really social and happy, or sick and depressed...

Yeah, I've been using beaut for a little over a year now and I can say that I am a more happy and social person when I'm beauted, but the times between using (when I'm sick), I am an extremely depressed and moody person. I'm not too fun to be around when I'm sick, just ask my girlfriend. She gets it the worst but still sticks by my side. I guess that's why I wuv her to death :X

When I'm really high on opiates I'm just straight up irritable after the initial rush of talkativeness. I really only ever use pod tea, hydrocodone, oxycodone, and hydromorphone, with the latter two being rarely though. It's like I feel so good that any outside stimuli is interruption. Thats why I don't use opiates so much anymore: Can't be treating my girl inadvertantly that way ya know - love her too much. more than drugs :p

When I come off though, with minor withdrawal, its like I get a flood of all my humanity back. All my emotions come back, and all I can think about it love and life. It's strange how I don't notice I have lost that humanness until it starts coming back.

Ive never experienced this, but then again when I was really using opiates earlier in the year I would use them for the sole purpose to seperating myself from everybody else. Pop 2 or 3, put a cd in and nod off in front of the TV in the dark.

I Understand This 1000%. I Was Actually Just Thinking About This Today As I Sit Here In Withdrawal Mode. I Feel Like Crying And Thinking About The Most Weird Shit. I'm Not Used To Feeling Emotions Like This Anymore. It's Been So Long.

i do dope regularly and the only time i am happy and "myself" (i think i am) is when i'm high, when i dont have dope, i could care less about the world, i'm emotionless, and everything is negative. When i take a suboxone tho, i feel more like what i think myself would be, even more than if i were high.
It is scary tho, what a hold herion has over you. I would love to see what i am like w/ no dope, no suboxone....it's been so long. heh

Sometimes I can't make it to work without having a shot before work... even though I'm on 100mg of Methadone I still have to fix in the morning, otherwise I'm a miserable piece of shit.

I tend to become a happier person willing to do more while im on them. I guess everyone's different.
do you have a tolerance/dependence?

i think without a tolerance and dependence, opiates tend to make people happier and more sociable. with prolonged use, the opposite

curiously they do the opposite to me

When using opiates, I can be more sociable or I can just 'chill'.....its a nice feeling that is really just an amplification of my normal demeanor.

Its odd really.....I got 100% hooked on crack/coke and struggled to get away from it......but with opiates I can control myself. I limit my use to 3 times a week, usually not consecutive days.

I feel fine, if not better than usual, the day after use. An occasional headache or ill feeling is remedied with a simple aspirin if I happen to overdue it.

I have to say opiates are now my favorite and most versatile way to alter my self now a days :D

bingo. the worst is when it starts making you nearly suicidally disphoric and you cant learn anything new [as opiate use inhibits long term potentiation of synapses ie learning], and even though you know you'd actually be happy if you could quit, you cant because you're addicted.
yea been living that one for a while.

strange. opiates are the only things that actually give me back my motivation for life. for the things i used to be interested in. for having fun, doing things, making things, being active. i dunno what you guys are yakkin about, but opiates give me motivation. i WANT to live my live when i'm high on opiates

right on i wish i could live my whole life on opiates the only time i want to do stuff is when i get a good nod

Does anyone else experiance this? Why do opiates do this to one, is it possible to have an addiction to opiates yet still be able to be sociable and intrested in what other people have to say?

Not for everyone, i know people that completely turn into walking waste when they develop a habit. They start caring less about friendships and whatnot, caring less about "life" and more about their fix... I never really experienced this, but i am NOT VERY SOCIABLE if im in withdrawal =p

Theoretically, talking specifically about opiates, if your dose isnt too high (otherwise you're just nodding off all the time, you're asleep essentially) you can live a completely normal life AS LONG as you continue using the drug and tolerance doesnt shoot through the roof.

such a warm and cozy trap
Agreed. Completely.

Warm and cozy are the perfect words to use to describe how it made me feel in the beginning, but towards the end, I needed a shot just to feel normal. I've been addicted to heroin for a while and I finally quit last Saturday. After being clean for a little over a week, I can't believe how different I feel. The WDs have been a fucking nightmare, some nights I literally did not sleep, but they're finally starting to ease up. Someone else earlier in the thread mentioned not realizing how inhuman you'd become until you become human again... So true. Never again. No opiate. Ever. Or I'll fall right into it again. I stole from my friends and my family, I ruined relationships with my best friends, got kicked out by my roommates and didn't care as long as I had that next shot. I still crave it, and I even found some opiate painkillers where I'm staying now, but simply as a matter of pride, a matter of being able to say "I haven't used an opiate for xxx time," I'm never going to use them again. Jesus christ, I wish I'd never began.

Ever since I started doing dope I just feel like I've lost all the skills I've learned while growing up. I'm only 19 years old but it seems that when I'm not using opiates, I feel so.. empty? I guess thats the word. I guess you could call me a recovering heroin/oxy addict. I wasn't into it hardcore as your "typical" addict but I have been to detox and have been on Suboxone. I definately noticed a change in how I feel, how I act and my overall perspective of things. Once I finally became clean for a bit, I began to set goals for myself (get a job, go to community college). It seems to be coming back but it sure isn't easy. Looks like I've still got some waiting to do before I'll gain back my social skills etc.

As someone posted above about the Suboxone. It does the same for me. Although it doesn't get me high, it relieves me greatly and I feel like I can be myself. I have no anxiety and have a pretty positive outlook. I do occasionally think about getting high, but I'm trying to continue to tell myself that "it's just not worth it"

ive read a lot about people who have just :accepted" opiates as a part of their existence.... I do not know what to think about that... its not the same as food ro water....u know.... but I do know how much "happier" is makes me feel..... but after being clean.... im a "different" kind of "happy"....... but not as social and loving....

fucking opiates

opies make me more social and loving

and blissed out if nodding

^ so i accept them the same way i accept chocolate

Lately I've been really stumbly and mean on opiates.

pregabalin at high doses + opiates makes me a mess doing actual "work"

I was doing house siding and the other workers were slow as fuck and I was trying to move at full speed while they were idly working.

Pisses me off. I am ready to fight at any second and stumbly. boy, do i stumble around alot.
