Opiates and migraine treatment options

Hey all, I need some advice for my pain management regiment, I get ice pick headaches and get relief from opiates.

the problem is the side effects of what opiates I have.

1. codeine, and take between 120mg and 180mg depending on severity, and find the histamine response is bad, I generally feel queasy for 4-6 hours after dosing.

2. hydrocodone 15-20mg I find hydro has less histamine response, but I get ringing in my ears if I take it as little as 2 times a week

3. demerol, 100-150mg, no real problems but dont like the idea of taking it more then 2 times a week.

4. Fiorinal #3 I take 2 and I think the aspirin gave me a small ulcer so I really dont like taking this much at all.



now the way I take my pain killers is with a minimum of 48 hours between dosing and only once per day when dosing.

I settled on this pro-drug regiment after reading all I can about preventing tolerance and dependence issues in medical journals and pain management forums.
this method also prevents rebound headaches opiates can cause with migraine sufferers

now since I am not totally happy with what I have and want something that has less negative effects , I am thinking aboutgoing full agonist.

I can get anything I want pretty much so I was wondering if hydromorphone and oxycodone are any better for histamine response? I really hate the queasy feeling, I'm guessing morphine would be just as bad as codeine and hydro for that, am I wrong?

I feel like this might do better in OD than it will here, but I'll leave it in BDD for a couple days to see what responses you get. I dislike/have weird reactions to codeine and fiorinal (apap, caffeine, some form of barbituate one), so I don't have much advice to offer. Opiates tend to cause nausea however, and for me that still seems hit or miss.
 
do you see a doctor, bro? If not I highly recommend seeing a physician so you can get properly diagnosed and get on a proper drug regimen, to effectively treat your headaches. When it comes to migraines, opiates honestly aren't the most effective, and best treatment to use. But if they help you, and can keep your doses down, then great.

A lot of people have bad reactions to codeine. I'm one of them. I hate it. For someone with your tolerance, I would maybe try oxycodone. It's a bit more effective than hydrocodone for pain in my experience.

Opiates are only somewhat effective for migraines, and rarely are they effective for really bad ones. Speak to a doctor to at least get an emergency migraine drug such as a triptan. Opiates aren't going to help you when you have a really bad migraine. Seek medical advice.

Aboslutely right "NeighborhoodThreat"

No way for my (strong) migraines with opiates !!!! they don't work at all, even strong opiates, migraines is a very special (and awfull) type of pain.

Triptan are the best and the more efficient for me. I use 100mg Sumatriptan + only 500 mg Paracetamol or 200mg Ibuprofen at the start of the crisis, then, again the same dose two hours after but only if necessary. Most of time one dose is enough.

Ask your doctor the starting dose is in general 50mg Sumatriptan It is just an example wich by the way maybe not work properly for you.
Also, there is plenty of triptan type...

All migraines are different and what works perfectly for someone can be a shit for an other one...

Opiates can be effective for light migraines ONLY

to clarify, I get ice pick headaches, not classic migraines, I have been to 3 different doctors. I do get relief from opiates, all my drugs are prescribed.


I cant take allot of migraine meds because I cant take beta blockers or anything from the sulfa family of drugs


I need to know if the histamine response is less with oxy and hydromorphone compared to what I have.

Ahh, that makes more sense. I don't know what treatment options you've gone through for your migraines but I've tried (and been prescribed) nearly every triptan, Fioricet and Phrenilin (Fioricet without the caffeine) and this strange cocktail drug called Midrin (Isometheptene, Dichloralphenazone [a chloral hydrate and antipyrine mixture], and APAP).

Of course, LSD is the best anti-migraine drug around, but the triptans have come in close second.
