Apologies if this is general knowledge to opiate users and a common side effect, am just wondering.

Does opiate use cause one to become hyper aware of smells, particularly bad smells? I find minor bad smells like washing or an unwashed plate someone has left ketchup on (student house) highly irritating on opiates. Occasionally I smell something annoying I can't even find a source for.

Also once when I was at the bus stop in summer and was wearing sun cream, a heroin addict sat far from me questioned me on what the smell was. I apologised and explained it was my sun cream, and he went on to say that when he's shot up recently he tends to smell things. Then he pointed to a powder on the floor that appeared to be chalk and said that he was certain a smell was eminating from it earlier and irritating him.

Then an alcoholic sat down and he proceeded to tell me that drunks irritate him because they cause trouble and piss and throw up everywhere and that "at least us smackheads stay out of people's way". I know that's not relevant just thought it was interesting, plus I've taken a moderately high dose of tramadol and may be blurting out shit. Also I don't live in some hellish part of town with junkies everywhere, I was just in the middle of the city centre at night and in Brighton, so, you know.

Anyway so yea, smells?
