The Opiates came from Opium poppy, from opium. (Natural) (For example: Morphine, Codeine)
The Opioid can be any agent which can bind to opioid receptors. (Not only natural) (For example: Fentanyl, Methadone)
In short.

Opiates are substances with ability to bind to opioid receptors in body - naturally ocurring in Opium poppy. Opioids are synthetic/semi-synthetic substances with chemical structure able to bind to opioid receptors too, but they are not interchangable - Opiates are opioids but not ale opioids are opiates. Correct me if wrong.
