Opiate Nausea

I am sure most of you know that it is common to get nauseous while using opiates. I for some reason cannot kick this unwanted side effect even though I have been using for about a year now and have a moderately high tolerence. I do not always get sick and the means of adminstration do not seem to matter.
My questions are:
1. Does anyone know what causes this side effect?
2. When ever I do get sick I am usually very high and once I puke my high is greatly reduced. Is this common? Why would this happen? This happens even if what I was taking was not taken orally.
 
The sigma/kappa receptor is often the origin behind the emetic properties of many opiates/opioids, although emesis is demonstrated very prevelantly in pure mu agonists.......

You do see it more with panatherene opiates (morphine, codeine) and semi-synthetic opioids (the "codones", heroin etc), as they affect the full spectrum of receptors, but as i mentioned, it occurs with pure mu agonists as well....

Meclizine or other anti-histamines help, phenergan works well for some if you need it. When i get really woozy, lying down at a slight incline (on your side to be safe) very still in the DARK help me.....

I do not know how many times i have banged dope. The nausea is expected, the mark of a good taste. I have dosed high and blacked-out, but never ONCE puked. I cant help you there, others with opioid related vomiting please chime in.
 
And here I was, just thinking kappa sigma was a fraternity. Oh what an ignoramus I am; my stupidity knows no bounds.
 
Yea thats one hell of a dissociative/dysphoric frat, and to think i was never a big believer in mass executions......
 
I used to have this problem frequently when I first started using and tried to overdo myself. I would just take various anti-histamines before dosing, and if it still occured I'd lay down under a cool fan turned on high.
 
Taking antihistamines with opiates can sometimes lead to a small mess (e.g., drowsiness, diziness, and overall sloppiness)

You should always remember to not move around too much - lying down helps. Small doses of Reglan or Compazine help too and they aren't sedating and do not affect the opiate pleasure as much as meclizine or any of those other otc drugs.
 
when i was being a good little girl and only banging h a couple of times of week, i got nauseous and puked just about everytime(for about a year). i found that taking a couple of diminhydrinate(dramamine) about 30-60 min before helped immensely, and i didnt notice it affecting my high. it is important to take it awhile before you dose though, or youll just yak it up.
 
Your could give metoclopramide a try for the nausea. It's an effective antiemetic and largely free from side effects.
 
i like to take a more natural approach to something like nausea; try eating crystallized ginger ... then again this is probably not the kind of response you were looking for
 
I appreciate all of the replies but my question was not on how to combat this but was about why this is caused which Negro attempted to explain with jargon I don't understand. I am also curious if anyone else notices a reduction in the high after getting sick.
 
I know this doesn't directly answer your questions but:
Emesis = vomiting/stomach upset.
Pure Mu agonists= Morphine, Hydromorphone etc.
Mu receptors produce the most profound analgesia, Kappa receptors trigger a lesser analgesic response, & Sigma receptors provide little to no analgesia.
 
I wonder if it isn't related to mu-opioid induced release of dopamine in certain areas of the brain (brain stem?). Dopamine, via D2 receptors, causes nausea/emesis. Apomorphine doesn't interact with opioid receptors, but is a direct dopamine (mainly D2) agonist and also causes emesis.
 
What about the roll of the chemoreceptor system within the brain that detects foreign substances in the blood and causes emesis (puking). I was always under the impression that this played a major role in opiate caused puking especially when it is injected.
 
I can't answer to the science behind the puke...
but i can say that i never noticed a reduction in my high after puking. it could be purely a mental thing, i know in a stressful situation my high tends to seemingly fade as i focus on dealing with said situation. maybe puking is stressful for you? just relax and let the puke flow freely.
 
my g/f gets sick on high(ish) doses of hydromorphone and/or oxycodone. one day i decided to give her a deep foot massage, to see if that helped. oddly enough it totally got rid of the sickness. just to be sure that this wasn't a fluke, we've tried it a dozen times since, and it works every single time.

no, fortunately i don't get 'sick', unless it's because i'm out of drugs. have you ever tried it? i know for a fact that my g/f wouldn't lie to me. i've been with her too many times while she's throwing up. i'd like to try it on some other people, just to see if the same holds true. i'm under the impression that there is a pressure point on the foot for every one of the vital organs in the body, so it makes some sense.
 
^That's really interesting. I get nauseous and typically vomit every time I use heroin so maybe I'll ask my girlfriend to try it next time. She's an esthetician so she gives great massages.
