Opioids Opiate Cross-Tolerance

A friend I have used to abuse hydrocodone, Oxycontin and Tramadol, in addition to other pills that were not opiates. This friend did this for a 2-3 years and developed a tolerance to these drugs. Since then this friend has stopped doing these drugs but has developed bronchitis with a pretty bad cough. My friend has been prescribed a codeine cough syrup that has not been effective even at 2-3x the recommended dosage. Could this be because of the previous opiate use?

Meh, try mucinex...helps make the cough super productive

Codeine is weak and u are probably looking for a different high than codeine offers

Let me clarify, he's not trying to get high off it. He legitimately wants to suppress his cough, the reason he got this was because Robotussin and Mucinex were ineffective.

Depends on how long ago did you quit the other opiates.

If heavy abuse was involved for a long time then tolerance comes back real fast(its been reported several times that with opiates you rarely(if ever) go back to zero tolerance similar to what you had when first started),and more so if you recently quit.

Imo you should tell your doc about your situation(dont have to be specific if not comfortable,just say you had an accident in the past and they prescribed you alot of opies) and ask him to prescribe you a non-opiate syrup or medicine.That might work better and that way youd avoid temptation..

Temptation isn't really a problem, I've been clean for a while and I'm not going back. Is there any way to reduce the tolerance to the codeine?

1-2 ozs of codeine cough syrup had me feeling nice....

Codeine along with certain other morphinans is a cough suppressant but it doesn't work to totally supress coughing.

There's no way to reduce tolerance once it's built up.
