I'm having some trouble here with the constipation that comes with opiate use. Ive been using mostly hydrocodone and fentanyl, and the constipation problem is pretty bad now. It's been quite a few days. Any suggestions?

Drink a lot of water. Eat fiber BEFORE taking your meds. Continue to eat Fiber. Prunes help too. I've bought Chitoson which apparently is a potentiator for opiates but I have found that it helps with pissing and shitting. Try some OTC laxatives or fiber supplements.
GL, hope this helps.

Get some otc natural pills called fibercon (its just fiber) and take them four times a day also enema i it gets to bad constipation can make you sick. And cant stress the importance of water. Lots of water. Try not to take to many laxatives cause u will get addicted. Hope u feel better

using other drugs to combat the negative symptoms is not a good idea, but coffee, nicotine, and amphetamine seem to cure this side-effect for me

As others said fibre and lots of water are both very good; something oily in your diet is good too, as is exercise.

If you want to take medication (understand people not wanting to, but equally you really don't want this to get out of hand and it is easier to treat before you become really bunged up!) then a stimulant and a softening laxative together is often your best bet. Bulk-forming laxatives don't tend to work so well, but they can be effective if combined with a stimulant laxative. Stimulant laxatives can cause cramps and you need to be careful you don't overdo them or they can irritate your gut.

Stimulant laxatives include Senna and bisacodyl, softening includes PEG and docusate (also a stimulant), bulk-forming includes ispaghula hulk (eg Fybogel) and various other fibre preparations.

I did have a study on the most effective laxatives for opioid induced constipation but I can't find it right now..

Suppositories can be helpful but only really for clearing the rectum/distal colon. Enemas can obviously be very effective but if you get on top of things early you shouldn't need to resort to them, plus as opioid constipation results from a slow bowel it can easily back up further than an enema can reach.

Eep. When I was using heroin heavily, I didn't take a sh-t for a week. I got so scared I had a panic attack and almost went to the hospital. But I drank a lot of caffeine, used nicotine (I don't smoke), and got some laxatives. The laxatives helped and eventually I went.. It was hell!
