"Operation Ivy League": 5 Columbia students arrested for dealing a variety of drugs

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/07/columbia-drug-bust_n_793177.html

"Since July, undercover officers purchased more than $11,000 worth of narcotics from the five implicated students. The drug deals mostly took place at Alpha Epsilon Pi, Psi Upsilon and Pi Kappa Alpha's fraternity houses, and some allegedly occurred at the students' campus dorms.

A police press release revealed that during a raid on the students' rooms the police uncovered a bottle of LSD, 50 MDMA capsules, 15 Adderall pills, at least half a pound of marijuana and around $2,000.

Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan told the New York Post that "The students arrested today supplied dangerous substances to their friends and other students to turn a quick profit, but subjected themselves to risks, of which they were either ignorant or in denial. These students were playing with fire.""

I guess you have to be a SPECIAL NARCOTICS PROSECUTOR to be knowledgeable on any recreational drug or psychoactive compound

What risks is she even talking about? Risk of prosecution from an authoritarian government which can't allow people to consume substances of their own choosing? Cuz that seems like the only risk taken here

Also, is it just me or does it seem like they do these things just to make up operation names? Seems like they spend more time naming these ops than actually putting effort into changing things, given how little impact their arrests actually have on anyone besides a select few

I feel for these guys, i really do. Bright futures down the shitter because these cops couldn't wait to ruin their lives for sport.

They should have seen it coming. What else do you expect to happen when you're selling various illegal drugs?

Columbia Drug Bust Suspects Say They Sold Drugs To Pay For School

Amid the ongoing investigation, more details about the charged students have emerged. According to the Columbia Daily Spectator, Chris Coles told police that he sold drugs to "pay tuition." Harrison David had earlier told a detective that he participated in the illegal trade because his father would not pay for school.

Jose Perez is a prestigious Gates Millenium Scholar and, according to Bloomberg, has "limited financial ability." Bloomberg also reports that Michael Wymbs had a previously clean record and a 3.5 GPA. He worked one summer as a cancer research biostatician and is in the midst of applying to graduate school.

Different bail amounts were set for each student, the highest being for Harrison David at $75,000. According to the Spectator, only Michael Wymbs was prepared to post his bail, set at $25,000; the other students were scheduled to be taken to Rikers Island last night.

none of those drugs are really dangerous if ur not an idiot... hell, they had real MDMA and not pipes, give em credit. They were providing clean safe drugs to their student body.

Columbia (University) cartel turn down no-jail drug plea offers in hopes of better de

The five students accused of running a cocaine, pot and pill operation out of their dorm rooms came to court with sad stories of entrapment, addiction and ruined academic careers today as they begged a judge to spare them from jail and from being forever tarred with felony records.

Prosecutors with the city-wide Office of Special Narcotics said they'd agree to no-jail deals for four of the five. But they wouldn't back down in their demand that all of the young men plead guilty to felony drug sale charges.

The five were all dealing drugs to turn a cash profit, argued prosecutor William Novak -- and not merely just to make enough money to support their own drug habits, as some of their lawyers argued in Manhattan Supreme Court.

Novak asked for one year prison for the most seriously charged of the five, third-year engineering school student Harrison David, accused of selling just under an ounce of cocaine to an undercover on one occasion, and four grams in a second sale, for a total of about $1,300.

David, the son of a Massachusetts doctor, had been selling small quantities of marijuana to help meet tuition costs, and only started selling cocaine at the urging of an undercover drug cop, countered his lawyer, Matthew Myers.

"Marijuana -- that's what they were known for until the undercovers came along," Myers said after court. It took his client "weeks" to come up with enough bulk cocaine to satisfy the undercover's request, Myers added.

It was precisely the undercover operation that drove any low-level, just-around-the-dorm drug dealing to higher levels, agreed another lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, who represents former anthropology and poly-sci junior Christopher Coles -- in whose dorm cops allegedly recovered more than a pound of pot.

They're turning down a no-jail offer!? Damn they must be confident in their lawyers. I'm currently in the same situation as them (arrested for dealing on a university campus, although I was caught with significantly less drugs), and would give almost anything for an offer like that. :(

That's fucked up they are allowed to ASK people to get harder drugs for them just so they can charge them.

Hope those under covers (read- probably rat students who got busted with small amounts and wanted their charges dropped) all get what's coming to them.
