Opioids opana and ms contin

the doc prescribes 90 mg opana ir and 90 mg ms contin er to be taken daily. both medications seem like they're the same thing, except one is IR and the other is ER. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? what is the difference between the two? I dont understand why the doc would be prescribing this combination, especially to an apparent opiate addict.

one is for extended pain relief (morphine) and the opana is for ground breaking pain when you need it instantly
