TORONTO - OxyContin and the drug replacing it are being removed from the list of drugs that Ontario normally funds.

The maker of OxyContin, which is up to twice as strong as morphine, will stop manufacturing the drug in Canada at the end of the month.

As of March 1, Purdue Pharma Canada will replace OxyContin with a new formulation called OxyNEO.

Its going to be a sad, sad day in a couple weeks. Canada is ditching oxycontins and going with the non-abuse formulation they have in the states. :(

Surely now all these people addicted will just give up opiates altogether as a result... or maybe people can switch to safer options like heroin or taking 30 tylenol #1's at a time..

Most people I know, and many fellow chronic pain patients have switched to Opana or Dilaudid now, two drugs that a few years ago, were much harder to find on the streets, but now, are more available and in my area, can even be cheaper than oxycodone.

Don't think we have opana in Canada...

Purdue will be making alot less money when no one wants their phony bs

They still market hydromorphone (Dilaudid, and Hydromorph Contin), buprenorphine patches (Butrans), morphine (MS Contin), tramadol (Ryzolt in the US, and Zytram XL in Canada), and codeine (Codeine Contin in Canada only) so I think they have the pain killer market pretty covered, especially in Canada where Opana and Vicodin aren't there to compete with.

i could see people switching to hydromorphone

Yup, and Purdue markets both the IR and ER versions of that so it will balance out for them.

I am not a user anymore, but a lot of the people I know are. This Oxy change has people worried. The word zombie has been thrown around a lot.

I am honestly scared, I have always felt that I have good intuition when it comes to the fluxing of the drug world. I have made solid predictions before, this... This, I cannot be sure of until it happens. I DO know that hydromorphone has become much more available lately. I had a friend over the other day who did a shot of oxy, I told her about the oxyneo and she did not seem too fazed. People who inject their pills want hydromorphone anyway, no apap, no time release, and it is cheaper and has been for years.

When I was in the 12th grade (5 years ago) I did not find oxycontin, it was fucking difficult. I had connects with big crack-fucks around my town, I heard about oxys here and there and saw them probably 2-3 times while in high school. I never saw hydromorphone until AFTER I left school.

The stories I hear now are of kids becoming freshmen at my old highschool having their first day pictures taken on the nod. Stabbings, thievery, prostitution, guns, diseases, funerals and rape are some of the stories I am hearing from the younger generation. Why was it not like this when I was a kid (thankfully)

What the fuck will happen when what is available is hydromorphone and fentanyl? (Tommyboy you forgot fent, and it is very available) People will move on, this will not topple prescription drug opiate addiction of course. It may actually make things worse, put stronger drugs into the hands of kids.

A positive I can say about generic oxycontin is that it can't be cut. You know what you are buying when you buy an 80 these days. (If you know what to look for) When using hydromorphcontin in capsules, the price was right, but it was in a bead capsule. I once bought a cap half filled with venlafaxine. THAT WAS A BAD DAY and if I was on other meds, It could have been deadly.

I had to go to a bar the other day and sit with my head in hands talking to what used to be an enemy of mine, getting together for the better good of our friends and asking each other "what the fuck is going to happen?"

I know that in my home town that the information on how to turn flat fent patches into inject-able solution is being passed around.

I was only listing the drugs marketed by Purdue to show that they will still have the majority of the painkiller business even if people switch from the OxyNeo onto other drugs.

I know a few people that died from hydros, and one girl who sank to rock bottom and is now clean and getting her life back together.Shits fucking awful, and yeah hydros are so easy to cut and are being cut! Hydros are really popular around here, i havent heard of people doing oxys in years, so there probly wont be much difference here.

My cousin works at a mill and this guy came for wood one day and another guy jumped out the truck and was talkin bout hydros, my cousin thought he meant weed and asked how was the hydro where he was from and buddies reply was "i love them! just shot one up in the truck!" lmao.

opana all ready took over here (in southern United states) but according to the FDA it will not be long till those are switched to the OP style formula. The tens are all ready once they are back out. whats crazy is i saw alot off people doing much worse (myself included) addicted wise to oxymorphone than to the old oc's. Rockstars are about to be ridiculously expensive... do they have those up in canadia?

oh roxies, never heard of anyone havin em aorund here. i asked a few ppl but im not sure if theyre around, maybe another canadian can verify?
