Only 10% of drugs cheats are being caught at the Olympics. former anti-doping chief Dick Pound told CNN on Wednesday.

The London Olympics have been dominated so far by the displays of 16-year-old Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen, whose world record time in the 400 meter individual medley prompted questions about her performances.

John Leonard, executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association described Ye's performances as "disturbing" but the young swimmer dismissed the allegations and Olympic officials insist that she is clean until proven otherwise.

"My results come from hard work and training and I would never use any banned drugs," she said.

Pound, who retired from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in 2008, said "anecdotally, maybe 10% of athletes use drugs and we're catching one or two of them."

He warned that the issue of drug cheating was "getting dumbed down" as sports organizations become "more worried about corruption."

"People who have prepared in advance and used drugs coming here (to London) won't get caught," said Pound.

"If you get caught you fail two tests, a drugs test and an IQ test."

Any other drug I'd disagree, but obviously since these are against the rules they're even more unreliable and potentially unsafe. So I'm going to have to agree.

I understand why people use them though, pressure from friends, other people, family (hopefully not directly, maybe like they feel that if they let their family down they're basically useless), and even seeing other people use them. It's like 15-year-olds drinking at parties. One bad kid starts it and then a few kids join in and then everyone feels pressured to do it to be cool, even if they're not consciously aware of it. I'm sure even if factors like this didn't exist there'd still be some 'performance-enhancer' use, but I'm willing to bet it'd be a lot less.

Also, didn't they title the article completely wrong? He didn't say only 10% get caught, he said 10% use and a few get caught.

Edit: Although in the case of China they're probably injected with the same stimulants people would use in horse racing before they're shipped off via Chinese UPS in a cat carrier.

He said that 10% use and only one or two of them get caught. I'm assuming that he's speaking out of 100, in which case one in 10 in 10%.

don't they get randomly tested year round?

If I were an elite athlete, I'm not sure if I'd want to do the Olympics while I'm recovering from a cycle. But if I were a marginal athlete I'd probably be using everything I can get in order to make the games. I read elsewhere how most of the steroids used in professional baseball are used by minor leaguers who aren't sure they'll ever get a big contract. Their logic is sound: if I do nothing, I'll never make it.
