Participants needed!

Have you had an experience with classic psychedelics?

My study ‘Investigating Sex Differences in the Therapeutic Potential of Psychedelics’ is looking for participants!

Who are we looking for?
In order to take part, you must possess the following qualities:

· Are at least 18 years old
· Are fluent in English
· Have had a psychedelic experience induced via a classic psychedelic (these include LSD, psilocybin, DMT/ ayahuasca, and mescaline).
· Are comfortable answering a survey about drug experiences
· Possess no personal relationship to the researcher (if you choose to participate in the study, you will be directed to an information sheet about the study. This will include my name and university email).
· Have access to a laptop and internet connection (to complete a series of surveys)

What will you be doing?
You are invited to participate in a series of online surveys about various beliefs following your recreational experiences with classic psychedelics (including LSD, psilocybin, DMT/ ayahuasca, and mescaline). If you agree to participate, first you will be asked to: read an information sheet, sign a consent form, and answer some questions about your demographics. These include: age, sex, gender-of-rearing and ethnicity. After this, you will complete the Ego-dissolution inventory, Watts’ Connectedness scale and the Free Will and Determinism-Plus scale. These are validated questionnaires that will assess various phenomena associated with psychedelic experiences, both during the experience and in the time following. After completing the surveys, you will be asked a series of open-ended questions about the phenomena investigated, your wellbeing, your integration of psychedelic experiences and factors that may influence your psychedelic experiences. Following this, you will receive a debriefing sheet and sign a final consent form. In total, this will take about 20 minutes.

Your data will be stored anonymously from the point of collection and identifying you from your data will be impossible. If you choose to participate, you will answer surveys that ask about your beliefs and state of mind following and during a psychedelic experience. Please remember, if this sounds at all distressing, participation is entirely voluntary. You are free to withdraw from the study at any point, and relevant wellbeing resources will be provided.

Who has reviewed the study?
The name of the ethics committee which reviews our applications is the School of Psychological Science Student Research Ethics Committee, (which is a subcommittee of the Faculty of Life Sciences Ethics Committee). Ethics reference ID: 21917

Why is this important?
Psychedelics are a class of hallucinogenic drug, originating from a variety of plants and animals with a long history of human use. Research suggests that they have strong therapeutic potential, with recent studies suggesting that they can treat a wide array of mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and addiction.

While there is substantial existing research on psychedelics, understanding how individual differences influence the experiences and therapeutic benefits of these drugs is limited in scope. This study aims to fill a gap in the literature on how sex and gender-of-rearing influences phenomena associated with psychedelic experiences and how this could relate to long-term changes in wellbeing.
