Online cannabis culture 'a concern'

Researchers identified more than seven million tweets referring to marijuana, with "pro-pot" messages outnumbering those opposed to the drug by 15 to one.

Experts have raised concerns about a thriving Twitter cannabis culture.

During a single month, researchers identified more than seven million tweets referring to marijuana, with "pro-pot" messages outnumbering those opposed to the drug by 15 to one.

Most of those sending and receiving "pot tweets" were under the age of 25, and many in their teens, said the team.

US psychiatrist and lead author Dr Patricia Cavazos-Rehg, from the Washington University Institute for Public Health, said: "It's a concern because frequent marijuana use can affect brain structures and interfere with cognitive function, emotional development and academic performance.

"The younger people are when they begin using marijuana, the more likely they are to become dependent. A lot of young people will phase out of marijuana use as they get older, but unfortunately, we're not good at predicting who those individuals are."

The findings, reported in the Journal of Adolescent Health, follow a computer search of tweets conducted between February 5 and March 5 last year.

Working with social media analytics company Simply Measured, the researchers looked for every tweet that mentioned marijuana.

Using search terms such as "joint", "blunt", "weed", "stoner" and "bong", the team turned up more than 7.6 million tweets referencing the drug.

An examination of a random sample of almost 7,000 tweets from these accounts revealed that 77 per cent were pro-marijuana, 5 per cent against, and 18 per cent neutral.

People tweeting pro-marijuana messages had more than 50 million Twitter followers - around 12 times more than those tweeting anti-marijuana messages.

Pro-pot tweets were most commonly aimed at encouraging use of cannabis and its legalisation, and made claims about the drug's health benefit.

Ten per cent of the pro-marijuana tweets were sent by individuals who said they were taking the drug or high at the time.

Anti-marijuana tweets often state the drug's users were "losers" or unproductive or that taking cannabis is unattractive.

i fail to see how this "online culture" opinion is concerning when similar public opinions/views/discussions are just as popular in real life and are also portrayed this way by the media both pro and anti marijuana?

Experts in what? The rat race?

US psychiatrist and lead author Dr Patricia Cavazos-Rehg, from the Washington University Institute for Public Health, said: "It's a concern because frequent marijuana use can affect brain structures and interfere with cognitive function, emotional development and academic performance.

I would love to see a study that compares effects on cognitive function, emotional development, and any academic performance effects between alcohol, television, and cannabis consumption. Even better would be a comprehensive study of the negatives of useless stress compared to the negatives of being regularly lit up.. ha.. yep

Do you really have any clue whether these brain effects are good or bad? In fact do you know anything about what is really going on here?

How was academic performance measured?

Were positive benefits from regular grass consumption ever examined?

Were the claimed "negative" results ever compared to positive results?

In these studies how well were external variables accounted for?

How do the negative results of grass use compared to the negative results of medications it is often used in place of?

How do you explain all the successful regular grass smokers?

Who has a higher standard of living. chilled out pot smokers or rat race idiots with unchanged brains?

Who is generally happier.. children or adults. Who is happier and more at peace, smart people or people of average intelligence. Cant by happiness and and i have never seen a degree offered for it.

Could it be that regular grass smokers moral and values differ from your own. This might make them score lower on your judgmental tests.

This just in.. Non grass smokers spend way more time working their ass off in the rat race while regular grass smokers see amazing music at 2374.56321% greater than non smokers. Non smokers spend 40% more time at the office working for the future of their children, while smokers spend 40% more time hanging and interacting with their children.. ya know doing things like flying kites, cooking for, and even playing video games with.

No stoner ever was found competing for their unborn childs acceptance in a ten grand a semester preschool, Because thats rediculous rat race shit.. probably talking with their kids and making fun of you miserable over achieving self righteous and utterly lost people.

It's a big picture.. probably to big for untorqued rat racers to comprehend.

Oh no...that's by far the most disconcerting news I've heard in a while...way worse than rouge killer cops and the NSA watching everything ppl do o line.

There has been a thriving online culture since before 2003. Maybe years before, I can only go by what I saw.

I know in 2003 I joined Overgrow.com and they were a pretty big weed website. I was already a member here when they shut down, but then I just stayed here.

So next are these guys going to give us their 2004 election predictions or maybe some predictions about what's going to happen at the end of the Mayan long count calendar on 12/21/2012?
