One thing I've noticed about BL...

Music becomes Top 40 when enough people buy CD singles to push it into the charts. Most music in the top 40 that belongs to a particular genre like trance, RnB, house, etc were all underground once. Once it becomes popular enough to be played on commercial radio though, it's suddenly no longer cool to listen to it; even though it is still a good song.

As people who belong to particular music 'scenes' you have the privelege of being able to hear good music before it becomes popular. Enjoy it, cause these days that period between releasing a song and it being a top 40 hit played every two hours on Nova is getting shorter and shorter.

I still like 4 Strings - Take Me Away, the original with no vocals is great and the vocal version lends itself well to commercial tastes. Nova play Delerium - Silence now and then too... doesn't mean we'll stop hearing it at raves.

A perfect example is Planet Funk - Who Said, first brought to the attention of most people in Melbourne when Dave Seamen dropped it during his set at TwoTribes back in March. A couple of days ago I flick on Nova and what do I hear? wtf?

Ultimately I think what determines whether a song makes it to the top 40 is how accessible it is to the masses.

macksta i have to agree with you.

if u like the music you like the music. but as some people have inferred to, the music that you listen to is marketed and produced to cater for a certain type of - personality - for one of a better word.

and obvioulsy those poeple who are focused on top 40 will probably have very different values as to the those people who listen to pantera or decided. i wonder if anyone here knows those bands. (slm?)

love what you love, and listen to what you want to listen to. but who gives a fuck what other people are doing, just let them have their fun, like you are having yours.

Laugh to Pantera. I guess you don't know what they were like before they 'went tough' and Phil shaved his "hair metal" hair off, removed his bracelets and got tattoos (tuff metal!) now. I don't know decided, but I know deicide with glenn benton.

*EDIT*
love what you love, and listen to what you want to listen to. but who gives a fuck what other people are doing, just let them have their fun, like you are having yours.

^^ so damn true......................... As long as your fun doesn't involve hurting others.. :)

i'd say the equation (as a generalisation, of course) is actually pretty simple.

[p1] most bluelighters are drug-users who want to minimise harm
[p2] anyone who wants to minimise harm, and actually seeks the info out, has at least some semblance of intelligent
[p3] "intelligent" people are more likely to listen to good music
--------------
[c] bluelighters are more likely to avoid top forty music.

Interesting theory, but then I must be an abberation...

An intelligent bluelighter who DOESN'T listen to techno, trance, nRG or whatever you call those doof sounds... who's never been to a rave.... and who will admit she actually likes listening to MMM! 8o

=D < proudly a freak of nature.

To be honest there is the odd song in the top forty which i can listen to but they always wear off so quick (maybe because the radio pumps them out an obcene amount)

But I have always prefered the less comercial side of music like metal and now trance, psy and NRG.

I always seem to dislike music that the majority like, I like to be out on my own and not follow the leader which comercial music is all about.

I know that alot of people listen to these genres (metal,Trance) but it is not common for the general public to know or even have a clue about this music.

Peoplelisten to this music because they love this music and don't listen to it because the radio plays it.:\

theres nothing quiet like hearing the backstreet boys and nsync while completely off guts on e. I Looooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee it!!!!!!!!!!

Ozmosis thats a very good point you bring up regarding exposure to certain types of music - people that listen to Top 40 are no less intelligent than people on bluelight - its the social culture that you are involved that plays a huge bearing on what music you are exposed to.

I had no idea what tekno (and all its forms) was until I entered the drug culture and found this board. Before that, tekno was purely dance music that was on the radio. No I know that its music that drug fucked kiddies in fluffy fluro pants listen too :p

my only gripe with top 40, is its too formulaic. not all, but most of it is the product of a marketing machine, desgined to sell sell sell! if music is an art form, which i believe it is, then top 40 is not music in this sense of the word...

Wazza: Have you been looking around pipeworks at hair-metal Pantera CDs? Also you forgot to add that Phil when he got his tough metal look after Cowboys also got sum dangly orbs!
*puts on falsetto voice* Medicene Man, wow!

Is that music stall still there at Pipeworks? I haven't been there for years!
