One dead, another on life support after suspected synthetic cannabis poisoning

A 33-year-old man has died and several others have fallen ill with suspected poisoning from a batch of synthetic cannabis in the north Queensland city of Mackay.

Police said a 41-year-old man was in Mackay Base Hospital on life support and several others had been hospitalised after using the synthetic drug.

Officers are investigating where the substance came from and if it is the source of the poisoning.

Synthetic cannabis is a psychoactive substance designed to mimic or produce similar effects to cannabis.

ABC Tropical North reported in November that the Mackay hospital had seen an escalated trend in the number of patients being treated for synthetic drug-related illnesses.

Dr David Farlow from the hospital warned of the dangers of using synthetic drugs.

"People need to be cautious about consuming these products where the ingredients are unknown," he said.

"These drugs pose a major risk to an individual's physical and mental health and the community."

Detective Acting Inspector Sam Bliss said the ability to buy materials over the internet or in suburban shops did not make their possession legal in Queensland, nor did it make them safe to consume.

"The chemical compounds found in these drugs are dangerous and are not herbal or natural alternatives to 'real drugs'," he said.

"They contain synthetic compounds which are toxic and extremely dangerous.

"Offences exist for possessing, producing, supplying and or trafficking in dangerous drugs, which includes so-called synthetic products containing these substances."

Detective Acting Inspector Bliss said police were investigating the death of the 33-year-old man on Tuesday, as well as the circumstances surrounding an earlier admission to hospital of the 41-year-old man.

Two dead from synthetic cannabis: What new drugs are doing to our bodies

BLUEBERRY Haze, Hawaiian Hybrid, Nitro, Magma, Panama Red Ball — it sounds like a list of cocktails. They are in fact the colourful street names for synthetic cannabis and they mask a truly deadly drug.

Two Queenslanders died this week, a 33-year-old man and a 41-year-old man, after taking drugs marketed as a “natural high”.

This is what experts have said about synthetic cannabis and what it does to the human body.

‘HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, HALLUCINATIONS, CONVULSIONS’

It is proving a nightmare for police, undetectable on workplace drug screens and now, apparently, deadly. But what does synthetic cannabis actually do to your body?

Professor Michael Farrell from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at UNSW told news.com.au that the drug works on the same receptors in the brain as marijuana but has “subtle but important differences”.

He said side effects include high blood pressure, agitation, convulsions and seizures.

“We need to look at the (Queensland deaths) very carefully to understand exactly how they died but we know that synthetic cannabis will increase brain irritability and reduce the seizure threshold,” Prof. Farrell said.

“That’s likely the cause of death. We can all have seizures but if you have a propensity for fits you become more vulnerable.

There are also long term concerns — anything that causes short term problems is going to lead to long term problems, and that includes schizophrenia.

‘THERE’S AN INDICATION DEATHS WILL RISE’

The two Queenslanders who died this week join a growing list of synthetic drug-related deaths.

When long-haul truck driver Glenn Punch stripped off his clothes, ran down a highway and collapsed and died in 2012, synthetic drugs were to blame.

Punch, 44, was under the influence of a drug known as ‘Smokin’ Slurry’ designed to mirror the effects of speed.

A coronial inquest into his death found Punch had scaled an 8-foot fence with barbed wire and “run about maniacally inside a shipyard” before bashing a glass door with an aluminium ladder and struggling with a security guard.

Hours earlier he had injected the drug with his partner Rachel Hickel.

Security guard Vincent Hagens testified that Punch “displayed super strength” and had “foam at the mouth”.

I'm sick and tired of hearing about "synthetic cannabis" and "synthetic marijuana," that is NOT what these compounds are, is it really that hard to say "synthetic cannabinoids" or, if that's too much for your average reader, how about "synthetic cannabis-like drugs?"

Thanks Prohibition! Without you, these men may have chosen to ingest the relatively safe drug cannabis. They probably would have had the munchies, ate a snack and then fallen asleep with no problem.

The damage that these drugs cause always makes the news. It's simply more boring to read about every drunk who does worse or similar things.
