The sun is settitng on my right
but I can’t see it – only
pink stained clouds
in between rows of unremarkable seats.

A woman whose
most immediate feature is her
weight
smiles at me before plopping
onto her seat.

Immediately in front of me is a girl I would sleep with.
I saw her kissing a boy in front of the station gate as I was boarding.

The early 90s country single “Independence Day” that has been sounding
from headphones on a boy with several facial
piercings directly across the aisle from me has stopped. He is asleep
and his legs are sprawled on the lap of a woman with a cracked face.

Up until now it had been constant, interrupted only by the occasional
musical ring from a jacket the man seated next to me left
when he went to the dining car soon after the train started moving.
