Bluelighter
ivy crawls up crumbling brick
broken glass, ashes and rust
a faint musk, smell of age
a woman lived here once
she knit an afghan for my mother
I remember how her hands always shook
and how lonely her voice sounded
stately wooden porch
rotten now, tunneled by termites
I hear she cried when they took her away
her son put her in the old folks home
he lives out of town, drove away fast
now I'm here at her old house
I step slowly inside
take a look around, dust everywhere
step out again, staring down at my feet
at the fraying ends of my shoelaces
I paste a condemnation notice on the door
the city says it's a blight, an eyesore
brings down property values
we'll bulldoze it soon
broken glass, ashes and rust
a faint musk, smell of age
a woman lived here once
she knit an afghan for my mother
I remember how her hands always shook
and how lonely her voice sounded
stately wooden porch
rotten now, tunneled by termites
I hear she cried when they took her away
