Harm Reduction Olanzapine and Alprazolam Interaction

Hi

I have been taking olanzapine as a sleep aid for around one week at 5mg because I had nothing else. Today I received my alprazolam (YIPPEEEEE) but looked up interactions, some of which have proven fatal! This seemed to be through IM use tho...

would they still be dangerous to combine them orally?

Hi, can't say whether it would be safe, but your on a reality low dose of olanzapine, did you get prescribed these meds? If so I would follow your doctors advice as to whether they can be taken together, if your doctor knows you are on both these meds I'm sure he/she would have mentioned any interactions. Though it seems to be IM use that is the problem... so I dunno about orally..

oh and I am not prescribed either of these... the olanzapine was my sisters but she no longer takes it so I was just using a lil to help me sleep.

so yes, should I just forget it until the olanzapine is out my system?

you used the drugs.com interaction checker right? those deaths were related to IM olanzapine during post-marketing use along with other drugs (IM'd), benzodiazepines just happened to be one of the other drugs which were used in combination alongside anti-psychotics. i would say adding in the IM benzos and AP's that have the potential to induce hypotension, bradycardia, and respiratory or CNS depression [1] would be a major factor of those deaths.

there is still going to be risk for a potentially fatal incident but given you're taking the drugs at the therapeutic doses prescribed you should have little to worry about.

has the doctor prescribed these in combination for yourself? i would be asking him these questions if so to get a professional opinion and answer.

i've been taking olanzipine and alprazolam for well over a year and i'm fine

ive been on zyprexa (olanzapine) 20mg for bipolar disorder for long enough that i lost count, also prescribed by the same dr... 5mg/day clonazepam.. no bad interactions, but than again alprazolam isn't clonazepam.

Have tapered off the clonazepam daily and only take it as needed now but was on it a long time.. legally and illegally about 7 years. Also used a lot of phenazepam along with it chasing a high i never got.

^^ well done for cutting down on the benzos :D

also, the site said it was benzos in general which caused a problem and it tended to be IM use, if you guys are fine and prescribed by a dr I'm gunna go ahead and assume I will be fine too but thank you for all your input :D.
