I've just read this article about the set up of the False Memory Archive.

I thought the concept is a fantastic one, and I'm fairly certain I've experienced it but I can't remember exactly what memories I've remembered incorrectly =D

Have anyone else experienced this? :) I'm very much intrigued.

p.s. Miss Chinup - If you wish to send this over to Philosophy and Spirituality then please do so ;)

I think it's high time this research was carried out, there have been many heated / sometimes really quite aggy arguments that have occurred over events that I have fully believed to be real and turned out to be fictional.

Aye totally :)
My assumption is that such "false memories" are formed from a collection of real experiences that have happened to you, experiences that have happened to other people who have told you about them, dreaming and probably films / TV / music etc.

Regardless, it's a very interesting phenomenomenom (doo dooooo d-doo-doo)

This subject was done to death just the other month on this very forum wasn't it?

It was was it wasn't it it wasn't ay was y'what y'whatcha say what was wasn't?

Spoiling all my fun MrM 8)

Totally agree. I've found myself stopping halfway through telling a mad story to someone & saying "wait the now, I don't think that actually happened" or them reminding me of a story I've told them & me realising that it didn't happen, or that I wasn't there. My memory is fucked up lol, I can hardly remember shit that did happen but I can remember lots of shit that didn't!

=D

Ha, I got busted telling a mate a story he'd told me a while back. My version was way better, I'd exaggerated most aspects of it. He's probably telling it now with some of my improvements woven in.

When my little Brother was 3 months old our family moved house & into a new area. Years later when my Brother got older he often used to join in in family conversations when we would be talking about how we all missed our old house, my Brother would join in saying how he loved the old house too. He used to get so angry when we would say to him that he was only 3 months old when he moved so he couldn't remember! He'd start describing the house & saying he remembered!

But he couldn't have remembered! He was just remembering our stories & what he'd seen in old photos! He used to get so pissed off with us when we told him he couldn't remember! He is 31 now & its still a touchy subject with him!!! Hehehehe!!! :)

^ A kid at my school once claimed he remembered being rushed down the hallway of the hospital moments after being born.

i think i had false memories of memories when i was younger.

several times i had really vivid memories that i just couldn't place. then they happened to the exact detail.

i rate that as pretty unlikely- even things happening twice just happening to be things i remember far more vividly than i do generally wouldn't make sense. so think the memories of remembering those things and not being able to place them time wise just appeared at the same time as the actual thing happened, some weird deja vu.

i can't remember the name of the lady, or the doctors involved unfortunately. but there was a very interesting + sad article about someone whose family thinks a psychologist planted (they claim 'recovered') memories of satanic sexual abuse, thus totally ruining the poor girls life and relationship with her family.

Haha, I've both caught someone doing that with one of my stories "I FUCKING TOLD YOU THAT!!!" & been caught doing the same. I blame the devil weed.

Gangsta shit.

Hmm, the Orkney Satanic Abuse business was more or less false memories implanted by psychotherapists, wasn't it? Nothing like a gross simplification of subtler events in the past but I guess that's what my memory's for.

I have a vivid memory of seeing Jesus hovering over an altar in a church but I expect that probably isn't real. He had no legs and a big blue cape.

False memories? Cant say I have any, don't see how it could happen unless you were tripping or something.

People have mentioned this before but I thought it was just them trying to escape if you caught someone bullshitting.

Na, it's definitely real. I know this as I've caught myself bullshitting (without meaning to) before & even admitted it halfway through the story when I've realised that I'm talking pish lol.

We all have millions of false memories.. we just don't realize they're false.. from simply thinking that woman you saw was wearing a blue shirt when it was actually red to thinking an event happened somewhere when it actually happened somewhere else to thinking you did something you didn't to thinking you heard something from someone when it was actually from someone else..

You can't just think: "hmm oh yeah that memory i have is wrong" as to you the memory is real until something or someone provides evidence saying otherwise.. which will almost never happen.

RE: memory of satanic abuse planted in girls memory

It's surprisingly easy to do if you know what you're doing and get the person into a trance like, suggestible state.. which a psychologist (with a few extra bits of knowledge on the subject) it would be no problem, especially seeing as people tend to trust doctors.

Derren Brown shit.

Theres a definite correlation to to amount of drugs taken < the exaggeration of thr story that may've been based in fact in the first place, i've had people telling me stories from when i was there with pretty much all the details changed! +I'm sure my mates have bullshitted me some of the stuff i did when i've been blacked out, or maybe its just i dont fully remember so i choose not to believe
