Official technical questions about computers thread

Fatoxious said:
Greetings, i recently got a second hand computer from my brother. i'm going to pop my hard drives in one at a time to copy my crap across, but my question is:

as one already has the windows operating system on it, will using it as a slave drive drive my computer to suicide in self pity of having so much microsoft on it?

i.e.- will it freak out if there is two operating systems installed: one on the master drive, one on the slave

They will morph together and create a giant Bill Gates robot that will fuck you very brutaly in the anus

seriously though, your main drive that you boot from should just read the files (given file structure is correct) on the other drive irrespective of the OS installed on it.

If pain persists though, consult a doctor

Nod32

Not really a technical question but a simple on to answer (I hope!) and rather than start a new thread I'll just put it here.

Because of my recent internet mischief I feel there is a possibility that my computer has contracted a virus.

Signs include reduction in computer performance, the speed has slowed down greatly. I don't think its a memory related problem because I recently deleted a large amount of music and the computer was running fine before that.

I have nod32 virus protection. When I use it to perform an in-depth scan all the data comes up in blue and it says either "error opening (file locked)" or "password protected file" after it. This has been the case since I first got it. Its only now that I feel it may not be working properly because it NEVER catches any viruses.

I don't know. Its defininately not scanning right or something. Anyone got any ideas?

You may want to to try an online virus scanner which should give you a general overview of your virus situation. A slowdown may also be the result of other Malware besides viruses. Running a separate adware program (or protection software that has adware protection included) is key. You can always back up your system and do a complete refresh if you can't target the problems. There is also several command line virus programs that can do a scan on boot.

^^Well, installing new software on a possibly already infected computer can be sketchy at best. Though some software actually has a pre-install viral scan and fix, though it doesn't necessarily fix boot sector viruses.

Of course, then again, you could switch to Linux? ;)

ok this is NOT my pc a friend brought this to me because his monitor kept popping up " no signal" i told him i'd look at it and surprise what a mess !8o

were there 10 chainsmokers living in the place where that came from? jeesus.

it's a wonder that shit hasn't clogged his fans and burned up his processor.

^ your correct the whole family smokes i guess the yellow dust gave it away the whole problem was a bent pin leading to the monitor but it was due a good cleaning too.

Thanks for the replies guys. I did an online virus scan and that showed up a few viruses. The pc seems to be a bit faster now anyway.

I'm not going to bother getting another anit-virus thing. I'm a little peed off that Nod32 doesn't work. I mean I paid €40 quid for it for the year.

AVG is free. If you have detected viruses, a scan once in a while will not cut it. You need constant protection from a AV program or a fresh format of your harddrive.. viruses will always fight their way back into your system through various start-up methods.

Bumpered...as I'm dredging the back end of the forum today.

Cheers.

*Don't know if mods want to merge any recent threads into a mega, or just tell TLB to stfu in their forum :o

^youre cool here :P. ill wait and see what enki says, since this is computer tech stuff, and i try to run the science part while he runs the technology part. we cross over all the time but he is very qualified there and i feel im pretty qualified for the sciences

personally, i like to see separate thread names for separate issues, rather than having to browse through a monster for something small. megathreads are useful sometimes though
