Did anyone else think that after taking up the moral highground before the match, Japan were quick to bust out the dirty tactics?

Seemed like every time a Socceroo got possession, a Japanese player fell on the ground clutching his shin.

And don't even get me started on that abortion of a goal which had Schwarzer(sp?) hip&shouldered away in the box.

But my god... that was incredible.

I was in a pub and everyone was slumped over and feeling awful until the equalizer.

Then the second got through and it went nuts.

When the third went in everyone started shaking hands and clapping.

Just a great result and a spectacular game. The implications of this will be immeasurable for Soccer Australia.

would it really have been that bad if japan conquered australia in wwII? we'd have great hair, plenty of gorgeous eurasian babes, and play reasonable football.

it just doesn't compute. how can we be so great after sucking for 84 minutes? no excuses, we fucking sucked. we're like rocky IV or something... get the shit kicked out of us and then against all odds shine. some kinda masochistic shit.

Talk about turning around a whole game. I say go Josh Kennedy for changing the play when he came on and Tim Cahill... you are my new favourite ;)

The pub I was in, everyone had this buzz after Cahill's first goal... there was a chant "Another one! Another one!" but I don't think anyone ever expected another two!

Watching SBS the hosts were pretty critical of Guus's play decisions in the first half...

I'm completely pumped up now so I figure I'll stay up to see Italy vs. Ghana, go my second team.

Fuck yeah!

Holy, motherfucking hell!!

That was about as intense as it gets.

We were on the edge of our seats here at home... we just KNEW something was going to happen. It HAD to... after the abortion that was the Japanese goal, karma had to hit their dogma, and get us through.

I was jumping up and down and screaming and oh my god how good was it!!!

Best. Game. Ever. (well except for the shite finishing in the first half by us, and the even shite'er officiating for the first half...)

Fuck I'm glad we are through that game :):)

We did well to do as we did. We deserved to draw, or perhaps win by 1 goal imo. To those hyper-critical peeps that say we didnt deserve to win against a soccer crazy nation and that we sucked for 84 minutes - you are clearly tripping. We dominated for the majority of the match - possesion was easily more ours than Japan's, and their only goal was the result of a wicked shoulder to our goalie that placed him well out of the way of saving their successful shot.

i'm hardly patriotic, but i love football and i want to see the quality of australian football rise...so i support the socceroos. i do however find it extremely hard recently to get excited about a team that is severely lacking in common sense skill. they can't pass, rarely go on runs, lack intuition, lack finishing, and luck saves them more often than not. there is some talent in the side but it is relied upon way too much which puts pressure on those who sometimes, due to fitness, are not up to the task. be realistic. we're shit, and i think it's about time australia stops kissing ass. cruel to be kind? maybe.

i'm glad they came through, but seriously...after the 84 minutes, did anybody think it was possible?
 
^ Agreed, a win by that margin was hardly warranted given the level of defense and execution of attacks seen through out the game. If they play like that with Brazil, its going to be sad.

Brazil will play with them like kittens in the first 70 minutes and then calmly swoop in and pick them off like eagles in the last 20.

Overall, gald we won though for the obvious reason and secondly, you would have never heard the end of it if the only goal against us was the first from Japan.... Could hear it now "We where ROBBED!!!... bloody Ref!"

Bullshit! As of last night we had never even scored a goal in a world cup and now we have 3 and a win under our belt!! Whatever happens for the rest of the tournament, that is a major achievement in itself.

Who knows? Maybe Brazil and Croatia will flog us, maybe we'll make it through to round 2, maybe we'll make the semis. Regardless, the bar has been raised and last night's win will usher in a new era of soccer popularity in Oz.

After the win last night, your negativity is completely misplaced. Australia is not a big soccer nation so what it has achieved so far is already worthy of praise. At this point, anything more is a bonus. Hanging shit on the team after a 3-1 win is straight up jaded and cynical.

Who cares how we played? We won our first ever game and did so convincingly! Fuck yeah!
