Court backs tourist ban for Dutch cannabis coffee shops

The European Court of Justice has ruled that Dutch authorities can bar foreigners from cannabis-selling coffee shops.

The court said the city of Maastricht was within its rights when it passed a 2005 law stopping foreigners entering cafes that sell marijuana.

The law was aimed at curbing so-called drug tourists driving from Belgium and Germany to buy marijuana.

Correspondents say the government wants to extend the restrictions nationwide.

There are some 700 coffee shops in the Netherlands. The cultivation and sale of soft drugs through them is decriminalised but not legal.

The owner of a Maastricht coffee shop had challenged the 2005 law, arguing that the policy breached EU laws on free movement of goods and services.

However, Thursday's ruling said the restrictions still complied with EU law.

"That restriction is justified by the objective of combating drug tourism and the accompanying public nuisance," the court said.

It added that the governments of Belgium, Germany and France had linked drug tourism to public order problems in their own countries.

Cannabis use in the Netherlands is tolerated in small amounts, with possession and purchases limited to 5g (0.2oz) per adult, regardless of the consumer's nationality.

However, the Netherlands' centre-right coalition government plans to turn coffee shops into private members' clubs amid concerns about the threat drug tourism poses to the Dutch way of life.

The BBC's Geraldine Coughlan in The Hague says the ruling could spell the end of the country's 30-year-old soft drugs tourism trade.

id just like 2 jump in here & say how much i love d place, i havent travelled d world nearkly as much as id of liked but its 1 place id go again & again! They've just got it so rite ova der & d rest of d world shud take note. Its not just d drug scene either its der whole way of life! Now dont get me wrong 4 a person of my interests d drug scene is d best bit about it.
but like most of mainland europe d public transport is brilliant trains, buses & trams always on time 2 d minute! Great sites 2 c, brilliant history. Its everyting about d place!
D only ting id say is wit d dam itself & d main touristy areas its very expensive unless u go 2 d places d locals use. But comin from ireland im used 2 everytin bn expensive.
Anyway, no matter who u are r wot ur interests ders sumtin 4 u in Amsterdam r d Netherlands in general! I cudnt recommend d place enuf, every1 shud @ least visit 1se in der lifetime.

Would really appreicate some help. Going for the first time in a month and was wondering what hotels people would recommend? had a trawl through this but hotel wise no one is saying much.
 
quick question what are the pill prices in amsterdam, i messaged you "AmsterTram" but i think you think i was asking for pills lol.

so not go get ripped off by anyone say 10 green squirrels or q dances or any of the other high dosed pills???

My friends paid 10 euro a pill for the elephants in the summer in the dam, off street dealers aswell! I'm not too fussed about pills tbh as we are there during the week so wont be hitting any house or techno nights, fancy the truffles though...

When i was there at new years i was picking up blue rockstars for 3.50 each
 
3.50 each 8o good prices, was this off street dealers aswell i would be a bit concerned about going to street dealers,

im there thursday what clubs would you folk reccomend for the weekend? i have heard there is the sugar factory but i dont think it would be my thing:\ any other places that have good trance or elctro?

I'm a bit older 27 and not really into that scene, what i'd really like to know is the availability and quality of the heroin situation out there also where to head to to get a good bag, someone said to me to try the train station for rocks and H.

But some first hand knowlege from a BL who has been there or even better someone who lives out that way.

looked at whats on there and there looks more rock, indie and stuff on.. and some mad alternance dance music :\ errr... any other clubs i sure there was on called club 88 ??? what about escape?

If you goto rembrandplein there is normally something going on around there.
 
Anyone know what Den Bosch is like?

Off there for ASOT but got 2 nights there - wondering if it'll be a little village type place!
 
I'm hearing mixed reports as regards the state of the smack scene at the moment in Amsterdam. Is the drought still present as of this week?

Someone on another forum made the claim that they're back in business and exporting kilos to the UK/Eire, and someone else confirmed it. I havent seen anyone directly contradicting that statement when it was announced, but the last piece of info I saw as regards the smack situation in Amsterdam was 5+ weeks ago, elsewhere and to the effect that its as dry as a bone...or at least it was then.

Any info greatly appreciated.
