If you paid them, hookers would probably be happy to be your minions, or be another way to get some.
 
I guess it's about whether you want to put in little effort but lots of money (hookers), or lots of effort but little money (cult - you'll probably make money!)
 
I know of a certain Hubbard (not the cupboard perusing kind) who made a veritable truckload (the lottery win bringing kind) of cash starting a cult. Bet that fucker laughed all the way to the grave. Plenty of tominions too.

I'd like to meet one so I can spit on them. Following a religion of 2000 years of systematic brainwashing perfection I can kind of understand. But one that sprang up overnight and bears hilarious parallels to its founder's fictional work; that takes dedicated stupidity.
