Friday before Christmas = anyone with half a brain is at the pub. I'm all alone in the office.
 
So I didn't know what X-Factor is before reading this but I'm sure everyone else does. There's a FaceBook campaign to ensure that the winner of X-Factor doesn't have the number one single over Christmas (in the UK I think) by encouraging people to buy Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name Of instead. And KITNO is actually winning at the moment .

So my point was this article about some Simon Cowell guy who hosts the show having a hissy fit about the campaign is hilarious (and there's a cool sentence or two from Zach De La Rocha as well on the whole thing):

I loathe Simon Cowell.

I felt a little sorry for the X factor kid until he said he'd never listened to Killing In The Name.
 
At least the X Factor kid acknowledges that it isn't an attack personally on him, but on the whole X Factor train. Cowell seems to be in denial about that. He's such a douchebag.

I read it like he's a high-panter, but haven't seen him to know if that's what they mean or not.
 
Has anyone in Melbourne been to Alumbra? Wondering about the vibe etc... friend has suggested we go there for new years.
 
Yep, I have. I went there for a work Chrissy' party a few years back. It's very cool - awesome decore, very comfortable and lovely beer garden - but can get hot as there is minimal air con from memory. If you decide to eat the banquet, that's pretty good too. The music they played was traditional and very upbeat, lots of fun. :D
 
The decor looks really amazing from the pics I've looked at.

This is the new year's event they have on.

Do you have any ideas on the type of crowd they get?
 
It's hard to say, as I was there with my entire workplace [two buildings worth] and we didn't pay too much attention to the other people who were there. :)

I would say it would be a mixed bag, but mostly mid to late twenties to early to mid thirties? Mainly a drinking crowd, interested in having some laid back, fun and festive drinks with friends? At least that was the impression I got a few years back.
 
You could get caught out with some high brow pretentious folk.

However, not a bad place for NYE.

Docklands itself gets a slight carnival vibe to it NYE.
 
So, I haven't been around these parts [namely BL] much lately - but I'm in Australia until January 4th, staying with my dad and stepmum in Botany just south of Sydney.

Question 1 - anyone interested in meeting up? I don't know anyone my age (28, egads!) in this area, though I have cousins in Melbourne and up near Coff's Harbour.

Question 2 - any good parties for NYE or otherwise? I am considering flying down to Melbourne for NYE which I did last time I was in Oz in 2001, as they had better lineups there. But I'm a bit out of the loop these days! I like Trance, House, Techno, Breaks...not that the first seems to be around much these days.
 
^ I'd love to meet you! But unfortunately I don't see it happening with my being on call for almost the rest of the year and living no where near where you are. Gheeeeey :\ Wish I had of known you were coming.

I'd suggest Sensation White in Melbourne for New Years
 
I second the Sensation White suggestion, although I'm not sure you'd still be able to get tickets?

I know some of the Melbourne BLers are meeting up on the 2nd of January for the Annual Goon and Coon [thread should still be on the front page]. Maybe the Sydney-siders will do something similar this year? I'm sure you'd score an invite easily enough. :)
 
I think I'll stay in Sydney to save on travel costs - I also have nowhere to stay in Melbourne as my cousins there will be away over NYE. I'm trying to decide amongst the following, what are your thoughts on locales & lineups?

Based on the music alone, I'd say Infected all the way. They were amazing when I saw them years ago, but I have heard from a few friends that they've started playing different stuff [harder techy stuff?] than their usual psy sound at events.

Pendulum are incredible too, very worth going to see for good d'n'b imho.

Can't comment on any of the venues as I'm not familiar with Sydney, sorry!
 
If you want iconic Sydney, then Shore Thing at Bondi Beach is good (although sold out I believe?)
If you want to see the Sydney harbour fireworks, then Luna Park. Pendulum also sweetens that deal.
The Metro isn't a particularly special venue, but Infected Mushroom would be good, and you could still see the 9pm fireworks if you wanted.
I have been to Home on NYE before and it's a good venue - Darling Harbour has a real festival vibe.

Really depends whether music or vibe is your priority :)
