Off topic posting in the pics thread - your thoughts?

PsychoKitten said:
ahh to be honest there are no options here - the mods have said no. The pics thread is a joke and is obsolete since there is now a gallery feature. I don't get what anyone is whinging about but it doesn't really matter anyhow - you don't run the forum, you are just allowed to post in it and when you do so you agree to abide by the rules and regulations as set out by the mods and admins.

If you think you should be able to post whatever you want post it on your own webspace.

This is the kind of attitude that sets apart bad moderators from good moderators. See a guy like Raz can easily steer off topic discussion back on track with a gentle reminder, and everyone will respect that and make a conscious effort not to do it again. However, the alternative method is to berate us like children and threaten to close the thread - and we can all see how successful that's been now and in the past when you did the same thing.

I agree with vurt that people should gear their discussion towards the community, but there are times when that just doesn't happen - maybe people forget, or don't want to take a personal comment to a private message (it can be a little weird). If someone's consistently posting useless trash in the pictures thread then sure, give them a warning (via PM).. but by and large I don't think too many people cross the line.

I thought that the deleting of all non-photo containing posts was a bit heavy-handed. I was really annoyed when I saw that it had been done.
I can appreciate that the mods were just trying to stick to the guidelines. But I don't agree that posts which are a direct comment on a photo are "off-topic".

Raz: No-one thinks all mods are nazi's.

Either way, Kitty put it best:
ahh to be honest there are no options here - the mods have said no

And the answer is FINAL. ;)

Seriously though, I still don't see why all the editing was necessary. Obviously I'm a very slow learner... but take a look at threads like The Late Night Thread or The Singles Thread. They're primarily social threads with a purpose but not necessarily a topic. Why should there not be discussion in this thread? It's not a thread which is discussing anything in particular like a political thread or whatever.

How is, 'haha that was a fun night. We were cooking steak' or 'hey was that photo taken at such and such an event?' any worse than 'you are hot'. It's still in relation to the pic. Even if a post is only inspired by a pic rather than directly related I still don't see the problem. It's a SOCIAL forum where people talk to each other. Not all of us want to venture into the time sucker that is IRC.

That being said, if the comments were actually annoying the majority people then cool... edit away. I just don't think they were [but I may be wrong].

Anyways, I get the distinct feeling I just wasted 10 minutes of my life writing this.

i say let the mods do their jobs, thats what we have them for right?

if there were no mods, there would be no forum, becoz stupid fights would be breaking out left right and centre..... it would be like an AFL match, where there were no umpires, and the players got to decide when they derserved a free kick etc.... wouldnt work

^^^ the afl match sounds like fun to me, actually ;)

anyway. i think this has all been blown out of proportion, but that's all i'm going to say on this topic except for this: please understand that all we're really trying to do is actually help this place out. criticism is good (and like raz said, good on kat for starting this thread, it was the best thing to do), but in the end we have to do what we think is right...

I just feel that some comments that are posted on the pic thread can come across to be very unwelcomed, eg.. you are a average person posting a pic then some "apparent" "SEX" god posts underneath you are forever hearing about how most of the bler guys would like a piece and etc..

If small talk isnt tolerated then why is it ok for us average looking people to be pushed out of the way and get no 'oh i like your hair and tee or anything.. but short skirts are??

Maybe this is out of line but I've been meaning to raise this for sometime now..

Lahlah..

Im all for small talk about the topic but in some moderation??

if i had any 'sex god' worthy pics to upload, i totally would. but all i end up with is shit like this:

:(

This is the wrong pics thread you moron.

no, im trying to prove a point that people should take as many 'sex god' compliments as they can, because there's no way im getting any.

moron? that hurts

i'm kidding of course.

wow, i went off topic in an 'off topic picture thread' thread.
gotta be proud of that

As far as I'm concerned, the job of a moderator should be to check threads for anything that may be deemed offensive, rascist, sexist etc.

As has been said so many million times before, I don't think its a mod's job to decide whether to close a thread or yell at people because a thread is going off topic. Who cares? Thats life. When you have a conversation with someone, you don't usually finish talking about what you started with.

As pleo said, if you don't like it, don't read it. But don't censor it because it pisses you off just because you have mod powers. Threads have a way of finding their way back on topic anyway.

And don't kid yourselves into thinking this is a moderators forum. Makes it sound like a police state.

Wrong, it is a moderators job to attempt to ensure threads remain "on topic", otherwise forums just get messy - when you click on a thread about a certain topic it is generally because you want to read about THAT topic, not about something else completely irrelevant.

However, having said that, I really don't think that most of the comments removed because they are deemed to be "off topic" are really that off topic at all - because generally they are relating to the people in the photo, or the location of the photo, etc.

I think it just needs to be accepted that people are going to have discussions within that thread about the contents of the photos that goes a little deeper than "nice photo, randombluelighter!".

I just never fail to be amused, and occasionally annoyed, at how posters in this social forum are so often scolded for doing just that, being social.

But I also think it is important to remember that without the members, there is no forum. It's all well and good to say, if you don't like, don't post, but I think those posting have every right to a say in the shaping of the forum. We may not be doing the work that mods do, but we also make a contribution here. I think it's perfectly valid to have an open discussion about the direction of the forum.

^^ yeah i think thats the whole point of a forum INTERACTION and we are DISCUSSING whatever it is that we are discussing. I get told off all the time that i'm posting off topic in other threads and even got a warning about it. The way i see it though is there are so many minds on this forum that when you read something it might strike a thought related to that but will be "a little" off topic and you want to share it which in turn leads to more discussion because it reminds someone of something else etc meh i would never want to be a mod here (maybe in another section of bl yeah but thats a shame as social is my favorite) basically because i feel this section of the forum is HEAVILY moderated and i feel like a kid doing something wrong every time i post and wonder if i stayed on topic.
