Sometimes you get caught
When you're not looking
And not prepared for what
Is about to hit you
Square between the eyes.
I stood, standing there
Staring into the stars
On a warm summer night,
Sweat cascading in sheets
Of my skin and my face.
Ashamed at what I had become
On that evening, the total opposite
Of everything I had preached against
For so long, yet..
There I stood.
Alone.
Fucked out of my goddamn mind
Not a clue where I was going
When I finally had to return
To a home I had grown to hate
To people I had grown to loathe.
This was the climax of my "new life"
Which seemed like nothing more
Than a brief four month vacation
In a shitty run down hotel
With loud, inconsiderate assholes
In the room next door.
I realized, at that moment
That my life had hit abosolute zero
And what living in poverty
Was truly all about,
This was a continuation
Of my own personal hell.
I carefully stumbled over
To the second stage where,
In one hour I was expected
To put on, quite possibly
The "biggest" one hour show
Of my entire life.
I stood around casually,
Eyes fighting desperately
To escape from my face,
non-chalantly shooting the shit
With you, my newest "friend".
You soon disappeared,
And I stood behind turntables,
Under brightly flashing lights
On an uneven, makeshift stage
Staring, completely amazed
At the mass of vehicles and people
All with their headlights directly
On me.
The next hour in my mind
Is one that I will never, ever
Be able to pull a memory from,
Much less a picture in my mind
Other than you, nodding your head gently,
And a mass of baggy pants, reflective strips
And brightly colored clothing
Meshed together in a whirlwind of dust,
Blades of grass, flailing arms
And pumping legs.
I grabbed my bag, head hung low
And slunk off-stage and slowly trod
Back up the hill to the campsite,
Frequently blinking, trying to decipher
If what was occuring, was reality
Fighting a crowd of baggy pants,
In the same condition as I.
I returned to the camp site,
To find you, sitting alone
On a bench, overlooking a stream
And at that moment, I shook it all off,
Realized you were catching me off guard
And I didn't know what to do.
Since that night,
Not a moment has passed
And not a day has passed by,
Where I haven't spent, or thought of spending
Every hour of my day,
Holding your hand or
Holding you in my arms.
I guess sometimes a surprise
From where you least expect it
Can turn your life around,
And not a day goes by
That my heart doesn't thank you
For catching me off guard that night.

It's bad when you're fucked up and you can still notice that something you just said was SO FUCKING STUPID, it should have never been said. It's bad. Isn't it?

I loved this the first time I read it, but I wanted to wait until it was near the bottom so that I could bump it back up. Great work.
