ODing on coke

Alot of people in my town have overdosed on coke over the last month. They were all people that I know, although I wasn't really friends with them. The most recent case was yesterday, and the kid died of cardiac arrest. Every time I hear shit like this it scares the shit out of me because I know that could have been me. Im a huge coke head (not something i'm proud of) and my dosages are really high because of my tolerance. I just wanted to know what happens when you OD on coke. I know you can have seizures or a heart attack, but what else? If anyone here has had experiences with coke overdoses (yourself or being with someone od-ing) I want to know exactly what happens, what to do, and how to know if the overdose is serious or non-fatal. Thanks.

There must be some really pure blow around your way. That is a lot of od's. I have never od from blow but a few times have experienced extreme chest pains when I do a lot. I suggest you chck out erowid for more information. Check out the vaults & reports...

To start I suggest you not listen to a word Noriego says. He is a fool and should stop talking shit about things he knows nothing about(which is about everything he spudders).
As for help, try a google search for "cocaine overdose" and your ?'s should be answered. If so many close to me have died from the shit, I think I'd maybe take a lil break, but thats my two pennies.
Take care and be well.

The OD would be cardiac arrest.. but before hand youd get symptoms like racing pulse, strong tension, shaking, profuse sweating.. when those occur its a good idea TO STOP!.. your heart can only take so much, if its beating as hard or harder than like strenuos exercise its a good idea to take some time off for the night.. If someone goes unconcius call medics immediatly.. Don't be a pussy about, your not gonna get in trouble..

Thanks silverfucked, thats what I was looking for, the symptoms that warn you before you OD. But say someone were to start having seizures, how would one know if it were serious enough to call 911? I wouldn't want to take my chances calling if the person might be fine afterwards, because i definitly COULD get in trouble with the law just for being there. It's called contributing to an overdose.

ANY siezures that are concurrent with amphetamine/coke use are serious. Call the hospital if this happens.

^^^^^^But I have seen people have very mild seizures from doing too muck coke and they were fine(though a little shaken up) after a few minutes. I dont even consider this an overdose. It would've sucked if we had taken him to the hospital or called an ambulance and incriminated ourselves for no good reason.

Generally, cocaine seizures are self-resolving but they are still life threatening and considered a sign of severe toxicity. Only a doctor can determine what needs to be done for any given seizure and there is no rule that says, "If he doesn't swallow his tongue, turn blue, and require CPR, then its just a baby seizure and doesn't require medical intervention." Even if you recover without medical help, its still reccomended that you see a doctor immediately.
Most cocaine deaths (non-traumatic) are caused by tachydysrhythmias (arrhythmias, irregular heart beat). Unless you hook yourself up to an EKG when you do coke, you probably wouldn't know that your heart rhythym was dangerously irregular.
Some deaths are also the result of myocardial infarction (heart attack). Signs of this would be severe chest pain lasting for at least 30 minutes, shooting pains in your left arm, paleness, sweating, vomiting, breathlessness, and myriad other symptoms (but could be relatively symptomless).
Agitated delirium commonly accompanies lethal cocaine toxicity. The symptoms would be bizzare and violent behavior, such as aggression, combativeness, hyperactivity, hyperthermia, extreme paranoia, unexpected strength, incoherent shouting, and terminating with cardiorespiratory arrest.
Hyperthermia definitely contributes to fatal outcomes, and seizures can further increase temperature.
There are so many possible symptoms and complications of cocaine toxicity that only a doctor will be able to determine how serious any particular case is. And you don't have to worry about self-incrimination if you take your friend to the hospital. Unless the person has an eight ball in his pocket when he arrives, there is no danger of getting in trouble. The only reason he would then is because the doctors would probably check his pockets and maybe get an analysis of the substance. Then they would naturally call the police to confiscate it who could press charges if they wanted. But if you have no drugs on you at the hospital, nothing will happen to you, so take your damn friend there next time he has a seizure.
Much of the information in my post comes from here: http://www.emedicine.com/emerg/topic102.htm

Thanks Abra, I think you covered everything I wanted to know. That shit doesnt sound too fun to go through. Im gonna try to cut down somewhat. I dont want my name to be the next one to hit the local newspaper's obituaries.

I think erowid is known by most people , i think replys with an erowid link are pointless. If I really wanted to know something in detail , I would check there first as would mostly everyone else. Not a personal attack at anyone , but I think a reply with an erowid link is a waste of space.

I was at a party last weekend with my botfriend & he racked up some biiig lines of coke, i took , one & started to prepare it to IV, while i wasnt looking he snorted 4, maybe 5 of these lines, probably 3/4 gram ( & was was preytty ggod stuff).
It was the first time he had felt any effects from coke & my god did he feel it!
He frreaked me & everyone e,lse out, he wwas pacing like a madman, breathing in & out really heavily , runninhg his hands through his hair etc.
He said he felt fine, GREAT even, but we could all see that he had done way too much, someone was getting him to smoke pot to calm him down (he doesnt smoke), is this a good idea?
Is there anything else you can do in this situation?
We were watching him pretty closely & would have taken him to the ER if it seemed like he really needed to go.

i think the safest thing, as long as he was still responsive and said he was feeling great, was to just keep an eye on him like you did. coke doesn't last too long so any rough spots would be over soon

Kell... I think you should keep your botfriend away from drugs... just my opinion :)
also.. anyone know anything about beta-blockers and how they can treat possible ODs?

Don't get someone to smoke pot if they have overdone it with blow. It will just make his heart beat even faster and possibly increase toxicity. Reassurance and a quiet, calm environment are the best things you can do; if the person starts to get really agitated for whatever reason, it will makes his symptoms worse (blood pressure, heart rate, breathing).
Generally, beta-blockers are contraindicated in cocaine toxicity because they leave the alpha adrenergic activity of coke unopposed. Because the beta effects compete with the alpha effects, the inhibition of beta effects causes the alpha effects to be potentiated. Alpha activity is associated with vasoconstriction, one of the major toxic effects of cocaine. Beta blockers are used as a last resort (impending death) in hospitals in conjunction with a vasodilator. So, I wouldn't reccomend premedicating with beta blockers. Like someone else said, coke has a short half-life, so usually you get much better within an hour or so, or much worse.
