I OD'd today. In the ghettoist of all places of course, a gas station bathroom. It was because i took xanax the night before. Had to be given narcan this time, (first time didn't, just O2). Had to goto the hospital and all that jazz. Before you tell me this is for my journal entry I just have a question Ya'll may or may not be able to answer. After given narcan, I experienced no withdrawls whatsoever. I felt sober and everything but no hint of withdrawls whatsoever. I waited about 5 hours and then shot some more H. Any one know why? Apparently it isn't like trainspotting?

Not that I've had any personal experience with naloxone, but I was under the impression that instant WD was more likely if the amount of naloxone used was more than was needed to treat the overdose, another important factor being the person's level of addiction/dependence. Also, naloxone is metabolised faster than most opiates.

Perhaps this is why you had a smooth recovery and were able to bang up later.

Of course, I could be completely wrong.

damn, wtf? you overdosed nad were brought back to life/ enabled t obreathe and all you're thinking of and one of the first things you do when you leave the hospital is shoot some more heroin?

bro, I dont mean to sound preachy or liek an asshole, but for real, it sounds like you need to quit that shit, if only till u get yourself together. go to rosecrance or some kind of rehab clinic and get clean. it sounds like youre in a dark place.

By all means you should have WDed after the narcan. Maybe the shock of ODing kept you from noticing.
For the other part, narcan (naloxone) has a very short half-life. 5 hours later its totally out of your system and you will get full effects from a shot of heroin.
(And this is journal material ;))

Youll only experience withdrawals if you are able to withdrawal on your own, without the aid of Narcan. What that means is if you can go any amount of time WITHOUT using heroin and not severely withdrawal, you wont withdrawal from the reversal of an OD.

Yeah, they have to keep administering the narcan over a period of time since it's half live is short - like 30 to 45 mins or something close to that. Maybe the dose of heroin outlived the doses of the narcan. I think that's why you didn't go into full blown precipitated w/d's after the 5 hours.

It's just a balancing act. Sometimes the narcan completely wipes out the narcotic, sometimes it barely touchees it. Addicts wake up pissed off all the time with a monster headache and a shitty attitude after being given narcan, it seems like the shot ACTUALLY WAS worth more than their life.

I've been using tor two years so I know the horrible of w/d. And the ONLY reason I used again right after is because I still had some left, the cops/paramedics didn't find it (I always hide my shit, had to go buy needles though). And I realize the story's journal material just wondering if anyone else ever experienced it, from what I've read quite a few have OD'd.

Wierd though I woke up feeling great...like sober actually. But yea that's it, thanks for the info on the narcan, I shot up exactly 5 hours after it was admin'd to me so I did feel the shot. Oh and BTW the asshole paramedics put an oxygen mask on me W/O oxygen flowing I woke up unable to breathe except through those tiny holes in the mask...I realized they saved my life and all but damn come on...

I was given narcan while on 350mg of methadone HCI and I instantly felt like death,, seizures, vomiting, diarahea, sweats, the whole nine yards, although its out after 5 hours, your still going through withdrawls until you get your next dose

Narcan is typically given in 0.2mg doses, either IV, IM, or intranasal.
The trick is to give the pt just enough to start breathing again.
Giving too much will often result in a pissed off addict going through rather intense withdrawals.
Or a little old cancer pt experiencing excruciating pain.
Some EMS crews have a dim view of addicts, and will often give a large dose IV, with a large IM shot as well.
This is so if the pt walks away when woken up, he can't get high for awhile.
Not nice, but it does happen.

Be Safe

Xanax the night before .... does this sound the slightest bit odd ... considering Xanax is short acting and doesnt even have a respectable half life... 9 or so hours ... that wouldnt have affected your OD ... you may want to rethink that statement.

Senior doctors and nurses know to only push a little narcan at a time. You want to allow the addict to breathe, and not throw him into full blown precipitated withdrawl. Addicts have been known to punch out doctors after being throw in precip withdrawl.

Thats not necessarily true, especially with something with a long half-life like methadone. You won't WD until your next dose, only until the naloxone wears off, and naloxone has a short half-life. Usually it has to be administered multiple times, with more being injected as the previous injection wears off.
So unless they keep on shooting you up with naloxone (lets assume its a one time injection), you would feel your methadone again, probably in just a couple of hours. Its been known for people to overdose again once the naloxone wears off... which is why they usually monitor the patient and are ready to give more naloxone.

The first time I overdosed and was given Narcan, I woke up in the hospital and tried to fight the doctors and nurses. I had to be physically tied to the stretcher. They gave me a shot of Valium but even then I was still in terrible withdrawals. That overdose was from 160 mg of methadone and some Restoril.

p75- Are you sure the xanax is what caused the overdose? It is a short acting drug and has a somewhat short half-life. Maybe the ghetto you were in just had some really good shit? lol But yeah seriously it seams that something like this would make you rethink the way you were living and maybe consider that it might be time for some help.
I'm not trying to be rude since I do drugs too, but I wouldn't be to proud about having to take a ride to the hospital then shooting up shortly after getting out.
And the paramedics were probably too worried about making sure you got naxolone so you would start breathing again.
They did save your life so you really have no place to criticize their work or the way in which they did it since you would be laying in a morgue right now if it wasn't for their oxygen forgetting stupid asses huh?

I ODed on methadone (about 300mg with no tolerance) and woke up in hospital... in bed. No withdrawal, no negative effects. Didn't feel the methadone any more either.

Do hospitals only use naloxone? There are much stronger and long-lived antagonists (nalmefene for example).

^ Naltrexone and Nalmefene are both used too. Naltrexone can be used instead of Naloxone, and due to its longer half life, is usually used during an OD of a long half life opiate. Nalmefene is used for opiates with a strong binding affinity, like buprenorphine.

How does that even work? They cant be IVing it for the obvious solubility issues, so if they are snorting it, then despite the still remaining solubility issues, the dose would have to be pretty high to be putting people in comas.

Some things in that article dont add up. Thats really strange.
