"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
Smoking marijuana now and then doesn't appear to hamper lung function, researchers found.

In fact, during a 20-year longitudinal study, patients who occasionally used marijuana actually saw an increase in levels of forced expiratory volume (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC), Stefan Kertesz, MD, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and colleagues reported in the Jan. 11 issues of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

"Up to moderate levels of marijuana use -- by that we mean up to the amount a person would smoke if they had a joint a day for seven years -- there's not a loss of air flow rate, there's not a loss of lung volume," Kertesz told The JAMA Report. "In essence, marijuana doesn't seem to behave like tobacco at those levels of use."

I suspected this for the longest time. Once I got my usage to a joint or less per night, I never had a problem with runs/sprints/etc. Of course, I could never compare to virgin lungs, but I didn't ever notice a problem with breathing even in these intense workouts. I currently smoke a few drags off of a joint (usually like half of a skinny one) on most nights.

Ive only been smoking weed for like 3 years and my lungs are straight fucked.

responsible use people...

I promise you, they're not fucked. I used to smoke a stupid amount in my younger days and I am a better runner than pretty much everyone i know nowadays.

Do you exercise? People can smoke quite a bit and not appear to have decreased lung function if they exercise as well (especially cardio, of course). I speak from my own experience here.
Do you smoke tobacco as well?

In any case, it is never too late to start exercising. You can recover most or all of your original lung function if you just jog, swim, or bike 5 hours a week.

I try but other than doing a lot of walking not much lol. And no I dont smoke tobacco, I hate it. Really the problem occurred when I was sick. My friend came over and we blazed multiple blunts and like a 40 in a bong... I think I got pneumonia or something.

anyways thanks for the feedback, I wasnt expecting it. Thats why I love BL!

Pneumonia? I highly highly highly doubt it
Bronchitis? Quite the possibility (and if not treated properly can turn into chronic bronchitis which is life long - go get checked out man, its a simple 5 day medication regimine and then youll be back in shape [granted you cut back on smoking for a bit])

Not a problem. Some more info on my personal situation:

I have been addicted to smoking cannabis for 25 years, and my lungs are in excellent shape.
I take smoking breaks regularly, and when I am smoking I never smoke more than about 3 hits at a sitting, or about 8-9 hits in a fully-stoned day (I am a lightweight, and I purposely keep my tolerance down). Honestly, I think 2 hits of good weed should be enough for anyone to feel it fully, unless they have their tolerance really high, which is how you wreck your lungs....(with the possible exception of natural heavyweights - but I still wonder if they are smoking high-quality weed).
I exercise a lot - 10 hours a week, counting cardio, yoga, and weights.
I also eat really healthy food, and almost no junk food. I try to get 10 varieties of veggies every day.
So, I would say that smoking weed can fit into a healthy lifestyle, and you can have good lungs and smoke.
(But vaporizing is definitely far easier on your body.)

And, as for your situation:
I also would recommend seeing a professional about your lungs asap.
Good luck!

I actually saw this on my local news today. I never expected to see a positive drug study on network news. The study itself doesn't suprise me though. In high school my cross country and track times were never affected by my smoking.

I'm asthmatic, but I blaze regularly. I find it's much more effective than my inhalers at preventing attacks, which have been known to hospitalise me in the past.

Try cutting back and use a vaporizer. Or you can eat it.

As others have said doing cardio vascular exercise helps a lot. When I was into smoking herb daily I just walked everywhere and I'd go to a gym at least 3-4X a week and do some lifting and do at least 30-40 mins of cardio.

I remember years and years ago I had a shwag connection that was pretty good. I learned pretty quickly that blunts are a one at a time and once and a long while type thing. I think it is the tobacco/chemical wrap that ruins your lungs more than the weed if you are smoking blunts.

Also I've seen people get shwag bricks that had been dunked in used motor oil to hide the smell. The bud could be got out clean if you took the time to unwrap it layer by layer and wash as you go until you get to clean plastic and you can cut it open, but that's a pain in the ass and plenty of fools just cut into 'em and get motor oil in the bud. If you smoke grade it isn't an issue, and it sounds like you probably do, but you know. Just say'n.

Anyway, yeah, this info has been around for a long time, but it is good to see a repeat study that confirms results. Most of the studies that conclude harmful effects of mild to moderate cannabis use come from comparing the amount of tar in the same amount of tobacco when burned without considering that one may act differently than the other in the body.
