Obama Says Legalizing Marijuana and Other Drugs a "Legitimate Topic for Debate"

This was from a youtube interview earlier today.

I gotta say, with a headline like this, it sounds more progressive than I would expect to see in practice. Something of a good sign I suppose. Gotta keep that hope and change alive. :\

Obama Says Legalizing Marijuana and Other Drugs a "Legitimate Topic for Debate"

President Says We Need to Shift to Public Health Focus, But His Budgets Haven't Done That

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, in response to a video question from a former deputy sheriff about whether it is time to discuss legalizing and regulating drugs in light of the failure of the "war on drugs," President Barack Obama said that it is "an entirely legitimate topic for debate" but that he is not in favor of legalization.

The President then went on to say that he sees drug abuse as a public health issue and that a shifting of resources is required, away from the traditional approach of incarcerating nonviolent drug offenders.

"The president talks a good game about shifting resources and having a balanced, public health-oriented approach, but it doesn't square with the budgets he's submitted to Congress," said Neill Franklin, a retired Baltimore narcotics cop and executive director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP), a group of cops, judges and prosecutors who support legalizing and regulating drugs. "The Obama administration has maintained the Bush-era two-to-one budget ratio in favor of prisons and prosecution over treatment and prevention. It doesn't add up. Still, it's historic that the president of the United States is finally saying that legalizing and regulating drugs is a topic worthy of discussion. But since the president remains opposed to legalization, it's clear that the people are going to have to lead the way. Police officers and innocent civilians are dying every single day in this drug war; it's not a back-burner issue."

The president's comments today, part of a forum organized by YouTube where people could submit and vote on questions, came in response to a question from MacKenzie Allen, a LEAP member and a retired deputy sheriff who did policing in Los Angeles, CA and King County (Seattle), WA. Allen's question got the most votes in the contest, garnering twice as many as the second most-popular question.

The original question and President Obama's response can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB7AK76TF-k.

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP) represents police, prosecutors, judges, FBI/DEA agents and others who want to legalize and regulate drugs after fighting on the front lines of the "war on drugs" and learning firsthand that prohibition only serves to worsen addiction and violence. sounds like the public wants answers from the prez. Definately sounds like a good progressive step towards helping the country in more ways than one.

One step forward, two steps back. Way to try to appease everyone without actually doing anything at all.

The top what, 400 questions submitted to be answered at the state of the union had to do with drug laws? He knows he has to acknowledge the issue, but ultimately all he has done is pay lip service and retreat right back to the way things are now. Trying to tell everyone what they want. pussy move.

talking about doing something is one thing doing it is another...

i think obama may have a good heart / good ideals but is handcuffed by politics (being "bought" =P)

If this country ever legalizes drugs, I would, as a Mr. Holly once put it, that'll be the day that I die.

It might not be the way you are thinking.
Remember, politicians often say X while believing Y.
So he first had to say he was against legalization, in order to get elected, but now if he wants to move in the direction of legalization, he needs to do it in several steps.

First, say it is worthy of debate, but that he is against it.
Second, have a debate, and allow himself to become convinced.
Third, sign it into law. =D

Now, I admit that I am trying my best to see things through rosy glasses, and that Obama has essentially never done anything I like (or done it the way I would like ) so far.
But he is a pragmatist, and this is the direction that the country/world is going.
I hope.

Whether Obama is pro legalising or not, he can't say that, it's political suicide for him and the Democrats and the dems aren't that stupid. The Republicans would be RAPING him. Look at the enormous backlash he got when he tried to give poor people healthcare, I'm sure he's still feeling sore from that one. If he even so much hints at legalising, Foxnews will call him Barack 'the druggie president that wants your children hooked on crack' Obama untill the next elections ..

its definitely political suicide if he outright legalizes, or even decriminalizes everything at this point. I dont see it happening until (if) he gets a 2nd term, and since he's openly admitted to doing coke and smoking weed, it might actually happen then.

no matter what though, this is a step in the right direction.

Obama is just scrambling for potential votes in the upcoming 2012 election. That is why he is trying to look progressive towards the idea of legalizing marajuana and other drugs. Most young people who voted did so for Obama in 08, and they seem to be the age group that he is trying to go after to win another 4 year term.

Don't get me wrong, it would be great to see more discussion on matters like this, and even the fact the president considers debating it is a great step forward, but I would like to know his opinion on the matter of legalization in general.

I agree. However one thing is for sure. WE WANT CHANGE!!! If he doesn't pass some positive drug laws, they'll never get passed...

I disagree. Public sentiment is obviously leaning towards drug law reform for at least marijuana - it will only grow stronger with time.

1) I believe the DEA is a rogue agency and that Obama couldn't stop them even if he wanted to.

2) Isn't it congress that would have to pass such a law?

I was waiting for him to do something useful! He's been one of the few presidents to admit he smoked a lot when he was younger.

if only we had elected a white president.

^lol. Fox would be all over him if he even hinted that he was contemplating giving legalization 5 minutes of thought, much less opening up debate on it.

Fox wouldn't say he's trying to get kids just hooked on crack, they'd say he's the illegal alien who is really working for African drug organizations and he's somehow made it to president in order to change drug laws and create a huge opening for drugs to pour into this country and those organizations to capitalize on the opportunity.
