NZ - Marijuana sent to elderly dad for pain relief

A West Coast man who posted pot to his 94-year-old father in Oamaru for pain relief has been convicted and discharged.

James Carson, 55, unemployed of Seddonville, pleaded guilty to two counts of supplying cannabis when he appeared in Westport District Court yesterday.

Sergeant Mark Harris said police had seized a package containing cannabis posted to Carson's sister in Oamaru in January.

Carson's prints were found on the package.

Another package containing 11g of cannabis was intercepted in April.

In May police found two packages of cannabis when they searched Carson's house.

Defence lawyer Doug Taffs said Carson's sister wasn't the recipient of the cannabis. It was for his father, who shared her house.

Carson had been down there for a couple of months looking after his father who was in extreme pain, said Mr Taffs.

He knew his father had used cannabis for pain relief in the past so when he went back to Granity where cannabis was cheap and abundant, he sent some to his father.

"It was a misguided but compassionate act", and this was reflected in the very light charges the police had laid, Mr Taffs said.

Judge Somerville said Carson had four historic charges of the same nature, but he accepted in this case he was supplying his father for free with pain relief.

He convicted and discharged him and ordered him to pay court costs of $132.89 on each conviction.

"The Daktory" cannabis club in NZ raided again

Three people have been arrested during a police raid at "The Daktory" in West Auckland last night.

Waitakere police executed a search warrant at the property on Delta Avenue, New Lynn, about 6.30pm.

Police said 15 people were at the address at the time and a search of the property was carried out.

More than $3000 in cash and quantities of cannabis marked for sale in display jars were found.

A large assortment of drug paraphernalia and loose cannabis was also seized.

Police said two men and a woman were arrested and charged with various drug related offences, including possession of cannabis, possession of a Class C controlled drug for supply, possession of a Class B controlled drug for supply, permits premises to be used for the purposes of offending against the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975, and possession of drug related utensils.

The trio will appear in the Waitakere District Court later today.

Waitakere Police area commander, Inspector Steve Kehoe, said people in the area had expressed concerns about drug activity in the area, and police will act wherever drug offending is taking place.

"These seizures will significantly impact on local cannabis consumers for some time and we will continue to investigate all reports of this nature," Inspector Kehoe said.

In March "The Daktory", a so-called cannabis club, was raided after members posted online they were selling cannabis from a vending machine.

Four arrests were made on that occasion, and large quantities of cash and cannabis seized.
