Dogs will forced to take lethal doses of party pills under a controversial scientific testing method being considered by the Government to determine whether the designer drugs are safe for humans.

The SPCA, animal rights groups and the Greens say using animals to prove the safety of non-medical drugs is "barbaric" and are urging New Zealanders to fight the proposal when public submissions are called for.

SPCA Auckland chief executive Bob Kerridge also urged New Zealanders to force officials into banning the trials.

"Any test at all for this product on animals is quite frankly abhorrent," Kerridge said.

"This is a product that is of no benefit to humans. In addition to doing considerable harm to the animals, it has no beneficial outcome whatsoever. Therefore, [the testing] should not be allowed."

Does it contain stimulants? Party pill - most likely
Will there be an LD 50/50? Yes.
Will the government probably self-assure an overdose? Definitely.

Testing fatality in dogs? What happened to rats?
Are chimpanzees too expensive?
My Reasoning: To give attention and build more tension toward the progressing popularity of drugs. Dogs are probably the most popular, beloved animal. Ever see a movie where the dog dies? Way sadder than a human. 1000x sadder than a rat.

Green Party MP Mojo Mathers said: "I think it is barbaric. Dogs and other animals shouldn't be made to suffer just so that we can get legal highs on store shelves.
"Derp Derp. Government totally supports legal highs, derrrp."
I have an idea, let's complain about a new brand of whiskey. Surely kids are doing that.

Erowid Explanation of the contents: (BZP)
BZP is a stimulant which gained popularity in some countries in the early 2000s as a legal alternative to amphetamine, methamphetamine, and MDMA.

So what's the point of making a big article about something that has about a 99.9% chance of becoming illegal?

I talk to a lot of animal rights activists (I am one) and they are always up in arms about animal testing. I understand that medicines need to go through clinical testing before being handed out to the public. This makes sense to me.

What doesn't make sense is testing these chemicals on unsuspecting different species. What is the goal? You may be able to determine what chemicals are absolute poisons that will make your eyes bleed and seizure to death... yeah... But, how is even the most progressed scientists supposed to gauge the effect between a golden lab and a 24 year older stoner.

I don't necessarily believe that bio-assessment is the way for new drugs/medicines to gain clearance. Sure, it proved positive for shulgins chemicals, but look how many stupid people died from just those chemicals, some from idiotic overdose (omit) but LOTS came from allergic reactions. I think new chemicals should be tested first with a bio-assessment and then move onto clinical trials with the species it is being marketed to. Testing my possible meds in dogs is offensive to me and the dogs. Spill out a few hundred thousand and pay some people to take the chemical in a hospital setting and pay them well... The only reason dogs and rats are used is because they are inexpensive and easy to dispose of (fuck digging 6 feet)

These legal highs are being marketed and abused by humans. Test them on humans.

Yeah I agree, there's enough people who will obviously use them and test them anyway without the research on animals. Humans can have a say if they wish to try and use/test a substance, giving it to dogs is insane, they cant say no, they have a much higher sensitivity to certain drugs and smells (of course) than humans. My dog stole a cannabis cookie out of a friends bag and ate the whole thing and when we came in and found the dog it was smashed as hell, it was really horrible to watch such a stoned dog. No immunity I know, but neither did I really, as I hadnt had any cannabis in ages, and 1 of the small cookies didn't do much at all to me. Point is I chose to ingest it, dogs cant speak up. Humans are so fucking selfish. Go test it on some idiots who wanna get fucked up on anything, its not like there's any shortage of them around the world.

ps) BZP was one of the worst drugs I've tried (along with kronic synthetic cannabis). NZ pumped out the bzp party pills for a while back in the early 2000's to a point where a certain company offered free samples to send out for free, even over to Aus so me and friends ordered a heap, they all came, we tried, we got headaches and felt pretty horrible. The pills looked like rip off ecstasy pills which was pretty bad I thought, like coloured pills with splits and logos. Some people would no doubt try and flog them at raves and festivals for ecstasy.

Maybe the animal rights activists should volunteer for all the lethal dosage testing.

Hundreds of dogs are put to death in a pound every day. In an ideal world they would be given a home but reality is they breed them selves to an early grave. I would rather sacrifice a few heroic dogs so many more humans are saved, particularly as this is in the interests of government sanctioned drug trials with the hope of legalizing something a little more enjoyable than a whiskey chaser. If you want to feel better about it then set a day aside where you can take a moment to give thanks to our animal soldiers.

im sure alot of people will be willing to volunteer to take the place of these dogs, and results will be way more conclusive

I doubt they'd get many volunteers for taking lethal doses of drugs.. It kind of implies you die.

oopss i guess i didnt read that carefuly :D haha
but then again i though it was year long practice to use rats for that purpose, not that it makes any diffrence

This study is pointless propaganda.
Lethal dose is important, but other physiological/psychoactive effects both short term and long term are more realistic examples of a drug study.
Also the effects in conjunction with pre-existing OTC substances in different doses.
As far as I know, deciding the legality of a substance is not done in one test. I'm sure it takes countless hours of labor in the rat park.
So do they plan to sacrifice an entire city of house pets?

The Lethal dose could be 500mcg and the medicinal dose could be 10mcg and it doesn't make it any more dangerous than if the lethal dose were 500mg and the medicinal dose is 10mg. Dose curve is way more important clearly.

People should question those who are paid to give out stories and information. Honestly, I would do anything to make a "scientific journal" type report more entertaining to this masses than this bullshit. (Excuse my language.)

pigs and cows are slaughtered by a pneumatic hammer thrust to the skull and feel nothing (in theory at least). But these dogs will seemingly be piperazined to death. So there is a bit of a difference.

Industrial chickens are the ones we should really feel sorry for. Their suffering is life-long. Along with veal calves. And fans of the Miami Dolphins.
