We fabricated drug charges against innocent people to meet arrest quotas, former detective testifies

A former NYPD narcotics detective snared in a corruption scandal testified it was common practice to fabricate drug charges against innocent people to meet arrest quotas.

The bombshell testimony from Stephen Anderson is the first public account of the twisted culture behind the false arrests in the Brooklyn South and Queens narc squads, which led to the arrests of eight cops and a massive shakeup.

Anderson, testifying under a cooperation agreement with prosecutors, was busted for planting cocaine, a practice known as "flaking," on four men in a Queens bar in 2008 to help out fellow cop Henry Tavarez, whose buy-and-bust activity had been low.

This is absolutely disgusting. Satan bless America.

I wish this would get massive media attention. I would like for more of the general public to see how many problems there are with the current state of policing in the U.S, if not worldwide though my only experience with police has been in the U.S.

i knew this was common practice but im glad all EIGHT of the corrupt cops out of the 45000 cops in nyc get some heat over it. I hope they get the worst. Problem is there are so many more corrupt cops that it really wont make a difference. Im just glad that at least someone somewhere is being held accountable for their poorly judged actions.

I think that those cops will get what is coming to them while in jail.

Protective custody.

The guy charged with keeping my happy ass out of jail is a former prosecutor. He uncovered a decade-long conspiracy by a few policemen who had gotten so used to planting drugs that it was just M.O. Almost 100 convictions, some of them lengthy sentences, were based on this fraudulent evidence. My main man switched sides and went pro-bono, suing the state on behalf of the families, and got all the convictions overturned. Cops are funny. You run into them on the street or in handcuffs, and they seem so down to Earth and friendly. And they are! But the truth about human nature is that good people do bad things. It's hard to keep from doing the wrong thing when you're in that law enforcement atmosphere. They get the same mercy as everyone else, I'm afraid.

Examples like this are why I think every BL member should be an advocate and militant in the political and social movements related to drug prohibition and addiction treatment. LEAP, NAMA, NAABT, DRCNet, etc. Actively participating against prohibition, for cutting edge research into treatment, against stigma and social pariah-ism, facts not rhetoric, for Harm Reduction policies and programs from the grassroots up to the national and international level.

They're organized, why aren't we?

Agreed. Completely.

Unfortunately I see this situation as a "reap what we sow".

I don't really believe in the bible, but I think it should be pretty obvious if "God Bless America" was first said under the blessings of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. All these blessings have been taken away by Draconian drug laws!

I.e. I believe "God Bless America" was supposed to be kind of a karma thing. As long as, we, the people, secure it's blessing, the blessing will stay.

But I think Americans have done a piss-poor job securing liberty/freedom :(

By all rights, anyone convicted of a drug crime of any sort where these officers were involved should be fully pardoned. This is disgusting.

your cops can already do false buys and shit; youd think thats enough.
But this... omfgwtfbbq
